March 26, 2021 | Softball
AMES, Iowa — The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team stayed unbeaten with its 23rd win of the season and first conference victory of 2021 on Friday, defeating RV/RV Iowa State, 9-7.
With the Big 12-opening win, OU ties the best unbeaten streak to start a season in program history at 23-0, matching the same start from the 2007 team. Additionally, Oklahoma improved its win streak to 30 consecutive games and Big 12 regular season unbeaten streak to 44 contests.
Senior Jocelyn Alo was magnificent yet again for the Sooners, blasting two home runs in the game and batting in five runs in a 2-for-3 performance and extending her program-record hit streak to 37 games. Redshirt senior Giselle Juarez collected her eighth win of the season in the circle with a complete-game, five hit, three earned run performance. Juarez struck out 11 batters, her third game of the season with double-digit strikeouts.
Oklahoma struck first in the top of the first, scoring two runs off a fielder's choice RBI from senior Taylon Snow and sac-fly RBI from freshman Jayda Coleman. The Cyclones responded with a two-run home run from Sami Williams to tie things up in the bottom of the first inning.
OU plated three runs in the third courtesy of Alo's first home run of the day, a deep three-run shot to right center. The NCAA home run leader launched her second homer in her next at-bat in the fourth inning, sending one over the left field wall for her 21st blast of the season and 74th of her career.
Junior Grace Green tacked on another OU run in the fifth on a sac-fly RBI to plate pinch runner Mackenzie Donihoo. Snow batted in her second run of the game in the top of the seventh, lacing an RBI single down the right field line to score Kinzie Hansen following a double from the sophomore.
Iowa State attempted a seventh-inning rally, scoring five runs on three hits and an error but Juarez struck out two to close the frame and game for the Sooners.
Along with Alo's 2-for-3, two home run performance, Snow chipped in a 1-for-3, two RBI game and Coleman went 2-for-3 with one run batted in and a stolen base.
The teams meet for the second game of the three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. CT before Sunday's noon start for the series finale.
