NNORMAN ā The Oklahoma women's basketball team held strong through a late Iowa State surge to put the Cyclones away 67-61 Tuesday night at Lloyd Noble Center.
Oklahoma (7-9, 4-7 Big 12) splits the 2020-21 series with Iowa State, avenging a one-point loss in Ames in January.
"First of all, when you play Iowa State, when you play a Bill Fennelly-coached team, you get better. It doesn't matter what happens at the end, you get better," said OU head coach Sherri Coale. "It's really one of the joys of competing in Division I basketball is playing a program like that that does so many things right and so many things well."
"It was kind of a grinder, which is an atypical kind of game for both [us and Iowa State] so I'm just really proud of our kids and their defensive focus and continued belief, for how connected they were and the response they had after the loss this weekend. I just thought they kind of attacked the next thing and I'm really, really proud of them."
Madi Williams had a monster night for the Sooners with 27 points and 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and the 14th of her career. Additionally, Williams' Tuesday performance was her fifth of 25-plus this year and marked the first time since November 2019 that an OU player logged back-to-back games with 25 points or more.
Gabby Gregory chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Neveah Tot joined Williams and Gregory in double figures as she logged 14 points to match her career high. Tot also hit a career-high three triples in the contest.
After a slow shooting start, OU turned things on in the second quarter to lead by as many as 16 and took a 35-28 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Cyclones made a comeback push in the fourth quarter, cutting OU's lead to 55-52 with six minutes to play. The Sooners' defense kept Iowa State in check and late buckets from Williams, Gregory and Tot sealed the win for OU.
OU heads to West Virginia Sunday for a 2 p.m. CT meeting with the Mountaineers. The game will be available on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
