Total Team Effort Lifts OU Past TCU

February 24, 2021 | Women's Basketball

FORT WORTH, Texas – The Oklahoma women's basketball team bounced back Wednesday with a 76-60 win over TCU.

The victory was good for OU's (9-10, 6-8 Big 12) first in Fort Worth since 2017 and the Sooners' largest margin of victory over a conference opponent this season.

"If I had a game ball, I'd give it to Tatum, for sure," said OU head coach Sherri Coale. "I thought she did a fabulous job on (TCU's) Lauren Heard who is just a handful to defend … I liked the discipline we defended her with. Tatum was great – her floor game was great. Six assists, no turnovers. She had the job of corralling Heard for 38 minutes till [Tatum] fouled out."

"Just a really good job by [Tatum] that set the tone and then a really good job offensively by a lot of players that had good balance. I thought we played together well and made some good decisions with the basketball, attacked screen coverages well and rebounded well. Just a pretty solid 40 minutes for our team."

Tatum Veitenheimer finished the game with four points, five rebounds, six assists and three steals. All three of Veitenheimer's picks came in the first half.

Taylor Robertson led all players with a season-high 28 points on 10-for-16 shooting from the floor and six 3-pointers. The junior added five rebounds and three steals on the night.

"I think that was maybe the best game I've seen Taylor Robertson play from start to finish," Coale said. "It was not only was she anticipating away from the ball defensively and rebounding, it was her craftiness going vertical – going north and south instead of east and west and she was just in that zone. Just the most complete I've ever seen her play. I thought that was an All-American performance."

Two more Sooners scored in double figures. Gabby Gregory added 16 points to go with six rebounds.  Fort Worth native Madi Williams chipped in 12 points and did a little bit of everything as she pulled down eight rebounds, dished four assists and tallied three steals.

Nevaeh Tot was one assist shy of a stuffed stat sheet as she tallied six points, seven boards and four dimes.

OU jumped out to a 39-21 lead at halftime after shooting 50.0% (13-for-26) from the field. OU used a 19-1 run in the second quarter to break away from the Horned Frogs, holding TCU scoreless over five minutes to close out the half.

The 18-point halftime margin was OU's largest halftime leads against a Big 12 team since Feb. 24, 2018 against Texas Tech, when the Sooners led by 23.

The Horned Frogs surged late in the game to close the gap to 11 points at 62-51 with five minutes left to play, but Robertson drained her fifth 3-pointer on the night to stifle a TCU run. The OU defense only allowed TCU nine more points over the final five minutes while the Sooners scored 16 more points to close out the game.
