ARLINGTON, Texas – The Oklahoma baseball team fell to Stephen F. Austin 9-5 Tuesday night at Globe Life Field.
The Sooners (1-2) led 5-3 after five innings on the power of a three-run home run by designated hitter Jimmy Crooks and a solo homer by second baseman Conor McKenna. The Lumberjacks (1-0) took advantage of four walks and two errors, scoring four unearned runs in a six-run sixth inning to move ahead 9-5.
Crooks launched his first home run as a Sooner deep into the right field stands to give OU a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning. Catcher Justin Mitchell led off the frame with a double and scored on a wild pitch after walks to shortstop Brandon Zaragoza and center fielder Tanner Tredaway, setting up Crooks' homer. McKenna hit his second home run in as many days with his solo blast in the fifth inning to make it 5-3.
SFA scored a run in the third inning and took a 3-0 lead in the fourth on solo home runs by first baseman Jordan Monacy and left fielder Clayton Loranger, before its six-run sixth inning. Aaron Brooks (0-1) took the loss in relief while Benny Emmons (1-0) earned the win in relief.
The Sooners threatened to score in each of the first two innings and again in the eighth with two runners on base and two outs but could not push a run across. Crooks, who also doubled in the first inning, went 2 for 3 with the three RBIs and Zaragoza finished the game 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and a walk.
Oklahoma plays at Globe Life Field again on Wednesday night. The Sooners face UT Arlington at 7:30 p.m.
