December 02, 2021 | Football

NORMAN — Tight end/H-Back Jeremiah Hall and punter Michael Turk were named to the All-Big 12 First Team and Oklahoma garnered seven All-Big 12 Second Team honors, as announced by the conference office on Thursday. Selections were made by the league's head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players.

The seven Sooners named to the All-Big 12 Second Team were linebacker Brian Asamoah, outside linebacker Nik Bonitto, kicker Gabe Brkic, offensive lineman Marquis Hayes, defensive lineman Isaiah Thomas, safety Delarrin Turner-Yell and defensive lineman Perrion Winfrey.
Hall, a redshirt senior from Charlotte, N.C., earned All-Big 12 honors at fullback for the third year in a row. He was also a first-team selection last year and a second-team honoree in 2019. He has 30 receptions for 320 yards and four touchdowns this season, along with 22 rushing yards and a score on five carries. His four touchdown receptions are tied for 12th most in the Big 12 and tied for the most among offensive backfield players (fullback/running back).

A redshirt senior from Dallas, Turk is averaging 51.3 yards per punt this season, which would lead the nation if he had enough punts to qualify (NCAA minimum is 3.6 punts per game and he averages 2.8). Nineteen of his 33 punts have gone for at least 50 yards, and eight have gone for at least 60. Turk, who was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection each of the last two years at Arizona State, has turned in five of the top 14 single-game punting averages in Oklahoma history this season, including the best and third-best marks (59.7 vs. TCU and 58.0 vs. Texas).

Asamoah, a redshirt junior from Columbus, Ohio, leads the Sooners with 89 total tackles (54 solo, 35 assists). The Butkus Award semifinalist has also notched 4.0 tackles for loss and a sack, as well as two forced fumbles. Asamoah, who has started 10 of the 12 games this year, has totaled at least six tackles in nine outings, including 35 tackles and all four TFLs over the last three weeks.

A redshirt junior, Bonitto has started all 12 contests and ranks second in the Big 12 with his 15.0 tackles for loss. He also ranks third nationally and first in the Big 12 with his three fumble recoveries this season. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., product, who was also a Butkus Award semifinalist, paces the team in QB hurries (nine) and has registered 7.0 sacks (for 39 lost yards), a pass breakup and a forced fumble.

Brkic, a Lou Groza Award finalist, has made 18 of 24 field goals and all 52 of his PAT attempts this season. The redshirt junior from Chardon, Ohio, has made 8 of 12 field goal attempts from 40 yards or longer and is 5 for 7 on tries from at least 50 yards. He is tied for the national lead with his five field goals of 50 yards or longer, two which were good from 56 yards. Brkic also leads the Big 12 in kick scoring with his 106 total points and scoring average of 8.8 points per game.

Hayes, a redshirt senior from St. Louis, Mo., has started all 36 games in which he has played over the last three years. The steady presence at left guard has helped the Sooners produce 38.4 points per game (leads the Big 12), 446.0 total yards per game and 265.3 passing yards per contest (both rank second in the Big 12) this season.

Thomas, who also earned second-team All-Big 12 honors last year, leads OU with 8.0 sacks (totaling 56 lost yards) and is second on the team with 11.5 tackles for loss (totaling 66 lost yards). The redshirt senior from Tulsa, Okla., has started 11 games and is tied for the team lead with three forced fumbles and four pass breakups. He has added three QB hurries and has totaled 38 stops (18 solo, 20 assists), and his eight sacks rank fifth in the Big 12.

Turner-Yell, a Hempstead, Texas, product, picked up his first All-Big 12 honor despite missing nearly four full games with injury. The senior has started 30 games over the last three seasons (including nine this year), and has notched a team-high three interceptions to go with his 47 total tackles (31 solo) and 2.5 tackles for loss. He demonstrated his value after returning from injury by recording 22 stops, 1.5 TFLs and two of his interceptions over the last four games.

Winfrey, a senior from Maywood, Ill., has been a force on the defensive line this season. He has started all 12 games and ranks third on the team with his 11.0 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks and has notched two QB hurries and forced a fumble. Nearly half of his total tackles this season (11 of 23) have been for lost yardage. The forced fumble behind the line of scrimmage resulted in a safety last week against Oklahoma State.

Several Sooners also earned honorable mention recognition at their respective positions: Brkic (special teams player), defensive back Pat Fields, defensive back Key Lawrence (newcomer), wide receiver Marvin Mims, offensive lineman Chris Murray, offensive lineman Tyrese Robinson, wide receiver Drake Stoops, linebacker Danny Stutsman (defensive freshman), quarterback Caleb Williams (offensive freshman and offensive player) and Michael Woods II (offensive newcomer) received at least one vote each for the respective individual awards.

Oklahoma has boasted at least one all-conference player every season since 1926 (94 years). OU has only had one season when playing in a conference without first-team honors (1925), marking 105 of 106 seasons.
