Sooners Open Year Ranked 16th in NWCA Poll

November 02, 2021 | Wrestling

NORMAN – The reigning Big 12 champion Oklahoma wrestling team will start its title defense as the No. 16 ranked team in the country according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association, who released its preseason poll this week.

The Sooners enter the 2021-22 campaign fresh off the most productive year of the Rosselli era, which started in 2016. Oklahoma pinned its way to its first Big 12 Championship since 2002, placing three into the conference finals as Dom Demas (141 pounds) took home his second Big 12 championship. The Sooners sent seven to the NCAA Championship where Jake Woodley became the lowest-seeded wrestler to ever make a semifinal, becoming an All-American as the No. 26 seed.

The No. 16 preseason placement is the second best for a Rosselli team, bested only by last season's No. 14 ranking to open the year. The Sooners have been ranked in the preseason in five of the last six seasons. Ā

The Big 12 has the second most schools represented in the poll with six schools in total. Missouri, who returns to the conference in wrestling alone after nine years in the Mid-American Conference, is the highest at No. 3. Oklahoma State sits at No. 7, Iowa State at No. 14, Northern Iowa at No. 17, with Wyoming coming at No. 20 to round out the group.

The Sooners will host four of those ranked teams in McCasland Field House, with home duals are scheduled against Oklahoma State, Missouri, Iowa State and Northern Iowa. Season tickets for the 2021-22 season are on sale now at SoonerSports.com and will be available until the second home dual. Season ticket packages, which include tickets for each of the Sooners' six home duals, cost $50 for adults and $45 for youth (ages 6-18) and senior citizens (55 and over).

The team opens its season Nov. 6 when they compete in the Michigan State Open in East Lansing, Mich. The Sooners then open their dual slate at West Virginia the following week on Nov. 13.
