OU Drops Battle at No. 13 TCU

October 07, 2021 | Soccer

FORT WORTH, Texas — The University of Oklahoma soccer team was edged by No. 13 TCU, 2-0, Thursday night in Fort Worth.

The Sooners' defense held tough against the 13th-ranked team in the country, shutting down numerous chances by the Horned Frogs as OU senior keeper Nikki Panas made seven saves on the night.

"Looking at TCU, it's been a 10-year project down here for them and there's a reason they're a good team," said OU head coach Mark Carr. "In moments, we went toe-to-toe with them and competed but right now we're in a habit of giving away soft goals and we've got to eradicate that.

"We did a lot of good things but when you give teams easy goals it gives them an advantage. The second half we made some adjustments and had some chances, we had a little more momentum after making some tactical adjustments but we just can't keep giving away soft goals and giving teams head starts. At 1-0, we were not given a penalty and that is a little of the luck that is going against us right now. We have to fix some things on the training ground. We have to go back to work, train and get better."

The Horned Frogs got on the board in the first half courtesy of a close goal by Grace Collins that snuck inside the near post in the 33rd minute.

The Sooners were on the attack in the second half with their best opportunity of the night coming from freshman Sheridan Michel in the 59th minute. Coming all the way from her defender spot, Michel took the ball inside the 18-yard box and fired a high strike that had to be punched out by the TCU keeper.

In the 86th minute, TCU put an insurance goal on the board as Skylar Heinrich outraced Panas to a ball and was able to slip it by a Sooner defender into the open net.

The Horned Frogs outshot the Sooners 25 to eight in the match and attempted seven corner kicks to OU's three.

The Sooners put half (4) of their shots on goal with Michel putting a pair on frame. Senior Erika Yost and sophomore Cailey England each put one shot on goal while four other Sooners registered a shot in the contest.

After playing four of its last five matches on the road, Oklahoma returns to John Crain Field in Norman for its next two matches beginning Thursday, Oct. 14, against Kansas (6-8-1). The game is set for a 7 p.m. CT first touch and can be seen on Bally Sports Oklahoma.
