Sooners Win, Punch Ticket to Big 12 Tournament

October 24, 2021 | Soccer

AMES, Iowa — The University of Oklahoma soccer team punched its ticket to the 2021 Big 12 Soccer Championship with a 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon over Iowa State.

"We set the goal at the start of the year to make the Big 12 tournament, to qualify for that, and we've done that with a game to go," said head coach Mark Carr.

"I'm just really proud of our team for reaching that goal. It was a difficult game today, we came off an extremely emotional game Thursday night. I loved how we responded, how we battled, how we stayed the course, how we stuck to the game plan and followed the process. It doesn't matter if that goal comes in the first minute or the 89th minute, our team is gritty and they found a way. They hung in there and I'm proud how we finished the game out, got the win and punched our ticket to the Big 12 tournament in Austin."

Seniors Erika Yost and Bri Amos teamed up for the game-winner in the 89th minute. Yost crossed a ball from the left side of the 18-yard box across the goal that deflected off the far post and off the ISU keeper, where Amos found it and punched it in with her right foot off the post and in.

The game was played in difficult conditions with heavy rain falling all match and the wind picking up in the second half in Ames. The Sooners controlled the pace for the entirety of the match, outshooting the Cyclones 19-8 and putting 12 shots on goal to ISU's two.

The Sooners made it difficult on the Cyclones all match, taking 19 shots and seven corner kicks, forcing the ISU keeper to make 11 saves.

Amos tallied her fifth goal of the season while taking two shots, Molly Feighan took four, putting all four on goal, while sophomore Cailey England and freshman Ella Pappas each recorded three shots. Four other Sooners attempted at least one shot.

Senior keeper Nikki Panas made a pair of saves in goal for the Sooners.

OU returns home to John Crain Field for its final regular season match of the season, this Thursday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. CT vs. Baylor. The match will serve as Senior Night and honor OU's 12 seniors. It can be seen on TV via Bally Sports Oklahoma. Tickets are still available via SoonerSports.com/tickets.

Oklahoma has locked up at least a spot in the Big 12 Soccer Championship in Round Rock, Texas, beginning next weekend. Seedings will be finalized following the last week of regular season play this week. For more info and tickets visit Big12Sports.com.
