Sooners Down Wildcats for Big 12 Victory

October 01, 2021 | Volleyball

NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team won its first Big 12 match of the season, defeating Kansas State, 3-1, Friday night inside McCasland Field House.

Despite dropping the first set, 25-23, the Sooners stormed back to win three straight, 25-20, 25-23, 25-20, to take the match.

OU (7-7, 1-2 Big 12) hit .234 for the match while holding K-State (9-5, 0-3 Big 12) to a .193 hitting percentage. The Sooners led in kills (59-56), assists (55-53), blocks (12.0-9.0) and digs (70-67).

"Paige Anderson showed up again tonight which is awesome," head coach Lindsey Gray Walton said. "We can consistently rely on her night in and night out, not just offensively, but she had six blocks tonight and she was worth 16 points. So the things that we're really concerned about is not only killing the ball, but how many additional points can you be worth in other areas."

Paige Anderson led the offense with 12 kills on a .429 clip with just three errors. Megan Wilson and Savannah Davison led the way with 15 kills apiece. Sarah Sanders also added nine kills at a .333 clip.

Peyton Dunn nearly matched her career high in assists while recording her fifth double-double of the season with 48 assists and 12 digs. The 12 digs is a career high for the freshman.

Callie Kemohah led the defense with 19 digs with Sam Anthony adding 17. Tyler Alcorn tallied six blocks along with Anderson to lead the team. Sanders chipped in five blocks to help the Sooners reach double-digits.

"Paige, along with our left sides, who are just naturally going to get a lot of sets because of the distribution and rally play, just really rebounded because neither of them were really good in that first set, so they battled and then pulled themselves out. For Savannah and Megan to both have 15 kills is a really gritty response by two kids that we're going to depend on a lot of the left side. As a coach, you always want to try and see if you're a winner, but at the end of the night, if you have three or four people in double digits then you're doing a good job."

The Wildcats took set one, 25-23. The teams consistently traded points with the Sooners pulling even at 20-all. OU held off K-State at match point to make it 23-24, but a kill from K-State's Haley Warner closed the set for the Wildcats.

The Sooners responded in set two with a 25-20 win. The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead to start the set that would be their only lead. OU used a 4-1 run to take a 7-4 lead before a LittleJim ace made it 12-8. A kill from Wilson gave OU a 21-17 lead, forcing K-State to call timeout. Wilson clinched the set with her fourth kill of the night.

OU used a 4-0 run to take a 6-3 lead early in the third set. The Wildcats pulled within one before the Sooners used a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead thanks to a kill from Alcorn. With the Sooners holding a 14-11 advantage, the teams traded 11 straight points before capitalizing on an error and a kill from Dunn to take a four-point lead, 20-16. Kills from Davison and Sanders set the Sooners up for set point and Davison's 12th kill of the match sealed the third set, 25-23.

The Sooners closed out the match with a 25-20 fourth set victory. K-State took an early 4-1 lead in the fourth set, but the Sooners capitalized on errors and a service ace from Anthony to take the lead at 5-4. The Wildcats came back to tie the match at 13-all, but a 3-0 Sooner run would force K-State to call timeout. Out of the break, the Wildcats pulled within one but an ace from Anthony put the Sooners back up by three, 18-15. A 6-1 run by OU gave the Sooners a 22-16 lead and Davison's 15th kill of the day sealed the match for the Sooners.

The Sooners and Wildcats will take to the court Saturday at 4 p.m. CT as the Sooners look to take the season series.
