OU Topples Tulsa 6-1

January 22, 2021 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN – The OU women's tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season with a dominant 6-1 win over in-state rival Tulsa Friday.

"I think we're getting better with every match. We're finding ways to put ourselves in a position to play our best tennis," said OU head coach Audra Cohen.

"If we get out there and we're not playing our best right away, we're finding a way to leave the court playing our best tennis. I'm really proud of this group."

OU took the doubles point for the third straight match, highlighted by a 6-0 win by the Corley sisters at the top spot. Carmen Corley and Ivana Corley shut out the No. 22 pair in the nation in Tulsa's Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner.

South American Sooners Martina Capurro and Dana Guzman clinched the opening point for OU with a 6-1 victory over Shura Poppe and Meghan Hopton on court two, marking the third straight match the duo secured the doubles point.

When play was halted, OU's Marcelina Podlinska and Kianah Motosono were locked in at 4-all with Laia Conde Monfort and Valeryia Rozenkova.

In singles, Guzman improved to 3-0 on the season as the freshman downed Tulsa's Ploner 6-3, 6-2 on court four. Guzman led the entire match and sealed it with an ace.
