NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's tennis team came out firing Wednesday and secured a 7-0 sweep of Incarnate Word to open the 2021 season at Headington Family Tennis Center.
"Our guys were so excited to get back on the court and play tennis again," said OU head coach
Nick Crowell. "We really came out ready to go. We put in a lot of preparation in the fall and in the last 10 days, just really getting ready to play. We executed well.
"I liked how we finished matches. I felt like we played better in the second set than we did in the first. We kind of found our range and the guys kept rolling and built up momentum and finished up around the same time, so that was pretty cool."
"We're feeling really good," said junior
Mason Beiler of the season opener. "It was a great team effort today and it was just really great to get back out on the court.
"Obviously a bit of nerves, a lot of adrenaline and excitement. It's been 10 months since we've been able to come out here and do what we love, so it was a lot of mixed emotions but we're just really happy to be out here."
The Sooners opened the match with the doubles point. OU's
Welsh Hotard and
Mark Mandlik shut out Cardinals Luke Godwin and Warren Fulgenzi, 6-0, at the No. 3 line.
Alex Martinez and
Jonathan Sheehy secured the point for OU with a 6-3 victory on court two.
The match on court one was played out and OU's
Jake Van Emburgh and
Max Stewart came out on top of Marwin Kralemann and Arnau Miralles, 6-3.
The Sooners kept a foot on the gas in singles action. Mandlik was the first Sooner off the court as he ran past Stojanovic 6-3, 6-2 on court two. At the top spot, ITA No. 69
Mason Beiler routed El Kadi 6-1, 6-1 to give OU a 3-0 advantage in the match.
Van Emburgh clinched the win for the Sooners as he took out UIW's Kralemann 6-3, 6-2 on court three. The remaining courts played their matches out. Martinez tacked on another win for OU as he took down Miralles 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 line, while Stewart played a near-perfect match to claim a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Marko Galic on court five.
Grad transfer Sheehy completed the sweep for the Sooners with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Fulgenzi on court six.
