Reaves Named Big 12 Player of the Week

March 09, 2020 | Men's Basketball

NORMAN – Oklahoma junior guard Austin Reaves has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Reaves led the conference in scoring with 27.0 points, shooting 51.6% from the field and 95% (19-of-20) at the foul line. He added averages of 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.0 steals.

The junior led the Sooners to a comeback victory at TCU on Saturday, scoring a career-high 41 points to go with six assists, five rebounds and three blocks.

Oklahoma trailed 44-26 at halftime and by as many as 20 in the first half. OU's 18-point halftime deficit is the largest halftime deficit overcome on the road in Big 12 history. Reaves was a catalyst in the late comeback, scoring 25 second-half points and hitting the game-winning shot with 0.5 seconds remaining.

Reaves' 41 points are the most by a Big 12 player this season and the most by a Big 12 player since OU's Trae Young scored 44 against Baylor on Jan. 30, 2018.

His 41 points were only a portion of the historic stat line. Per STATS Inc., Reaves joins Ben Simmons (LSU) as the only Division I players in the last 20 years to have at least 40 points, five rebounds, five assists and three blocks in a game.

The performance is the latest high-scoring showing by Sooner guards during the Lon Kruger era. Since the start of the 2014-15 season, there have been eight 40-point games by Big 12 players – six of which have been by Sooners. Trae Young produced games of 48, 44 and 43 (twice) in 2018 while Buddy Hield reached 46 in 2016.

The weekly honor comes one day after Reaves was named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team while also earning All-Big 12 Honorable Mention status.

Coming off a redshirt season after transferring from Wichita State, Reaves ranks sixth in the league in scoring with 14.7 points while also averaging 5.3 points and 3.0 assists. Reaves and Tyrese Haliburton (Iowa State) are the only players in the conference to averaging least 14 points, five boards and three dimes.

The Sooners head to Kansas City as the No. 3 seed in the Big 12 Championship. After a first-round bye, Oklahoma will take on sixth-seeded West Virginia in the quarterfinals on Thursday night at 8 CT. The game will air on either ESPN or ESPN2. The Sooners swept the Mountaineers in the regular season.
