Sooners Sweep First Match of the Weekend

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's tennis team swept UMKC Saturday afternoon, 7-0, at the Headington Family Tennis Center

With the win, the Sooners improved to a 9-4 overall record and UMKC dropped to a 2-4 record.

"The guys came out and took care of business. Conditions were rough for both teams today, but I think the guys handled it really well," said head coach Nick Crowell. "We'll just have to come back tonight and get our guys ready to go for tomorrow."

To start the match, the Sooners clinched the doubles point. First to finish was Mark Mandlik and Matt Rodriguez with a 6-2 win over Kacper Piekarek and Neil O'Connor on the third court. To clinch the point, Alex Martinez and Max Stewart defeated Jake Fraunfelder and Austin Williams 6-3 at the No. 2 line.

When play was halted, Jake Van Emburgh and Jochen Bertsch were ahead 5-2 over Diego Giraldo and Tom Kruse on the premier court.

Mark Mandlik was the first Sooner to finish in singles and came out with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Austin Williams at the No. 3 line. Alex Martinez defeated Neil O'Connor 6-4, 6-1 on the fourth court.

Clinching the match was Mason Beiler, who finished with a 6-1, 6-4 victory on court two. Seconds later, Jake Van Emburgh beat Diego Giraldo 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot.

In a tie breaker set, Justin Shlageter defeated Jake Fraunfelder 7-5, 7-6(4) at the No. 5 spot.

Jochen Bertsch finished the match with a 6-4, 7-6(1) victory over Kacper Piekarek on court six, bringing the Sooners to a 7-0 victory.

OU returns to the courts on Sunday to host Nebraska at 11 a.m. and Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 5 p.m. CT.
