Sooners Close Opening Weekend with Two Wins

February 09, 2020 | Softball

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico — The No. 3 Oklahoma softball team closed its opening weekend at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge with wins over George Washington (0-5) and BYU (2-2) on Saturday to move to 4-0 on the season.

The Sooners topped George Washington 5-2 in their first game of the day. After falling behind by two runs early, OU rallied with a combined five runs on five hits in the third and fourth innings.

Junior Jocelyn Alo drove in one run in the bottom of the third before fellow junior Lynnsie Elam hit the Sooners' second home run of the season in the fourth inning. Freshman Kinzie Hansen continued her impressive start to the season with her eighth RBI of the year in the bottom of the fourth before sophomore Grace Green batted in two more runs in the frame.

Freshman Macy McAdoo picked up her first collegiate win by throwing 2.1 hitless innings of relief while senior Shannon Saile notched her second save of the season. Saile struck out five without allowing a hit in 2.0 innings of work.

OU beat BYU 3-1 in a pitchers' duel in game two of the day. The contest was scoreless through five-and-a-half innings before OU plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth, courtesy of sophomore Grace Lyons and the Flores sisters.

Lyons reached on a fielder's choice to plate pinch runner sophomore Kinsey Koeltzow. Freshman Alycia Flores drove in Green on a groundout and junior Eliyah Flores drove in in Lyons with a single to right center.

Seniors Shannon Saile and Giselle Juarez combined for 11 strikeouts in game two, with Saile fanning eight and giving up just one hit in her 5.0 innings of work. Juarez picked up the win in her first appearance of 2020, recording three strikeouts over the final two frames.

Oklahoma returns to action next weekend in Tucson, Ariz., when it is scheduled to play five games at the Hillenbrand Invitational at the University of Arizona.
