HOUSTON – The No. 15 Oklahoma baseball team fell to Missouri 8-7 in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon in the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
The Sooners (8-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added runs in the fourth and fifth to go ahead 5-0. The Tigers (5-5) made it 5-4 in the fifth on a three-run home run and a sacrifice fly. OU extended the lead to 7-4 in the sixth before Missouri scored twice in the seventh and tied it in the eighth inning.
Freshmen Peyton Graham and Kendall Pettis each hit their first career home runs for the Sooners. Graham led off the fifth with a solo shot to left center and Pettis hit a two-run homer into the Crawford Boxes in left field in the sixth. Senior shortstop Brandon Zaragoza went 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI, junior center fielder Tanner Tredaway finished with two hits and two RBIs and senior second baseman Conor McKenna scored two runs.
"I think what happens when you have a 5-0 lead, you start playing down to a slower speed and you kind of buy into it instead of playing against the ball," Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. "I think that's a little bit of what happened in that game. You have to credit (Missouri) for hitting pitches they should've hit. Peyton continues to be a good player, and Pettis answered the call, came in and played really good defense and got a big hit for us."
Tredaway doubled home two runs with the bases loaded in the second inning to give Oklahoma a 2-0 lead, and a balk in the fourth inning brought home McKenna to make it 3-0.
Graham's solo homer and a sacrifice fly by Zaragoza in the top of the fifth inning extended OU's lead to 5-0. Missouri cut it to 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run home run by left fielder Alex Peterson and a sacrifice fly by center fielder Seth Halvorsen.
The Sooners responded in the top of the sixth when Pettis launched his two-run homer to make it 7-4. In the seventh, Missouri scored two runs on a double by Thomas Broyles and it 7-all in the eighth on a base hit by Luke Mann. A double in the 10th inning by designated hitter Peter Zimmerman scored the winning run.
Junior Levi Prater took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and finished with eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Aaron Brooks (1-1) took the loss for OU while Missouri reliever Trey Dillard (2-0) earned the win.
Oklahoma faces No. 11 LSU at 11 a.m. Sunday in its final game of the Shriners College Classic.
