NORMAN – Tatum Veitenheimer stuffed the stat sheet and
Madi Williams and
Ana Llanusa topped the 20-point mark but OU came up just short against Kansas on Wednesday night in Norman, 83-80.
With the loss, OU moved to 12-15 on the season and 5-10 against the Big 12. Kansas improved to 14-12 overall and 3-12 in league contests.
"We have to give Kansas a lot of credit," said OU head coach
Sherri Coale. "I thought that they played hard and played well. They obviously attacked the glass relentlessly and that is probably the biggest statistical difference in the game … I didn't think that we took advantage of some things that we could have and then the rebound margin was just too much to overcome."
Veitenheimer filled the box score with eight points, five assists and a career-high seven steals. Four of those steals came in the first quarter for the sophomore. As a team, OU tallied a season-high 15 steals with Veitenheimer claiming nearly half of those.
Williams led all scorers with 23 points on 9-for-12 shooting while grabbing six rebounds. Llanusa finished with 22 points in 21 minutes off the bench and went 8-for-11 from the charity stripe while adding four steals and three boards.
A back-and-forth contest saw 16 ties and 16 lead changes. With 2:37 remaining in the fourth quarter, OU tied the game at 75 on a Williams layup before Kansas pulled ahead 78-75. A pair of Williams free throws brought the Sooners within one at 78-77, but the Jayhawks went on a five-point run.
Taylor Robertson hit her lone three-pointer of the night with four seconds on the clock to close the gap, but Kansas came away with the three-point victory.
