Sooners Split Two Games on Saturday
February 22, 2020 | Softball
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The No. 3/3 Oklahoma softball team (11-2) split a pair of games on Saturday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
After defeating Seattle University (4-9) in the day's morning game by a score of 2-1, the Sooners dropped their second game of the season to No. 2/2 Washington, 12-2, Saturday afternoon.
Two Sooner home runs proved to be key in the day's first game. After the Redhawks plated one run in the top of the first on a RBI double, sophomore Grace Lyons and junior Jocelyn Alo went yard in back-to-back innings to fuel the OU win.
Lyons sent a solo shot over the left field wall in the bottom of the second for her third home run of the year prior to Alo homering in the bottom of the third on a no-doubter to center field. Alo led the team at the plate, going 2-for-3 for her fifth multi-hit game of the season, including her fifth blast of the year.
Shannon Saile (3-1) was impressive in the circle in her fifth start of 2020. The senior went six innings and gave up one run on four hits while striking out eight with no walks. Senior Giselle Juarez closed the game in the seventh, finishing with no runs, no hits, one walk and one strikeout.
OU faced the second-ranked Huskies (13-1) in the second game of the back-to-back. Washington struck out of the gate with three combined two-run homers in the first and second innings.
Down 7-0 through four innings, OU put together four hits for two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Pinch hitter Alycia Flores led off in the frame with a double to left before junior Taylon Snow brought her in on a single through the left side. Following an Alo double, freshman Kinzie Hansen found a gap in right to bring in Snow.
The Huskies plated five more runs in the sixth and seventh to take the top-three matchup, 12-2.
Alo led the squad at the plate again, registering her sixth multi-hit game on the year with a 2-for-3 showing.
Five OU pitchers saw time in the circle in the game, with Juarez (2-1) taking the loss in her second start of the season. Freshman Olivia Rains provided four innings of relief work to lead OU in innings pitched, striking out three.
The Sooners return to the field at Big League Dreams Sports Park to close their weekend at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Sunday morning against Wisconsin (7-5) at 11 a.m. CT.
