No. 3 OU Begins Mary Nutter with Two Wins
February 21, 2020 | Softball
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The No. 3 Oklahoma softball team claimed two wins Friday to begin the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, topping Nebraska 10-2 in five innings before beating Texas A&M 2-1 in walk-off fashion.
The Sooners (10-1) made quick work of Nebraska (5-5) in the day's first game. The bats were rolling early and often for OU, which registered 10 runs on 10 hits.
OU was led at the plate by a trio of Sooners in the day's first game. Junior Lynnsie Elam, sophomore Grace Lyons and freshman Kinzie Hansen combined for six hits and five RBIs. Elam continued her impressive start to 2020 with her third multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Lyons plated three runs for the second time this season in a 2-for-3 showing, while Hansen also went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Freshman Mackenzie Donihoo was also key, registering the second extra base hit of her career – a first-inning double – to bring in a pair runs. The Sooners scored six runs in the first frame and four more in the second in cruising to the run-rule victory.
In the circle, redshirt freshman Brooke Vestal posted the first win of her career after pitching the final 3.0 innings for the Sooners. Vestal allowed no runs and one hit while striking out one.
Oklahoma won a pitchers' duel in the second game of the day. The Sooners went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first on a Grace Green RBI-groundout to bring in junior Taylon Snow for the game's only run until the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh, the Aggies (10-4) tied the game on a one-run double to center field.
The Sooners responded in walk-off style in the bottom of the inning. After Green walked and stole second, Lyons doubled her home with a shot to center field to end the game.
In her second career start, freshman Olivia Rains was lights out in five innings of work. The Pryor, Okla., native struck out a career-high six batters and allowed no runs and two hits. Senior Giselle Juarez registered the win in relief, allowing one run on two hits and striking out three in 2.0 innings of work.
Oklahoma returns to action at Big League Dreams Sports Park on Saturday with two more contests. OU faces Seattle at noon CT before a showdown with No. 2/2 Washington at 2:30 p.m. Action can be seen on a subscription basis via FloSoftball and heard on The Franchise 2 (1560 AM, 103.3 FM) in central Oklahoma.
