November 09, 2020 | Men's Tennis

FORT WORTH – Freshman Welsh Hotard won his flight at the Big 6 Fall Invite as he went 3-0 on the weekend as the Sooners wrapped up fall competition with 14 wins.

"It's been great to get our guys three tournaments this fall against Big 12 teams," said head coach Nick Crowell. "We are very appreciative to everyone who helped make this fall happen for us during these uncertain times."

"Our guys continued to improve and gain confidence throughout the fall. We are excited about this next chapter and getting ready for the spring season and look forward to seeing this team grow on a daily basis!"

Competing in flight two, Hotard took out Texas' Eshan Talluri, 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-0 on day one before grabbing wins over Justin Bloss (TTU), 6-3, 6-4 and Max Kurzban (TCU), 6-2, 6-1, on days two and three, respectively.

Elsewhere in singles, Mason Beiler held on for a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 44 Siem Woldeab, who played in the top half of Texas' lineup last spring.

Freshman Nathan Han notched a statement win over ITA No. 87 Ilgiz Valiev (Texas Tech), 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Alex Martinez closed out the tournament with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over No. 35 and former doubles No. 1 Sven Lah (Baylor).

Matt Rodriguez topped Justin Bloss of Texas Tech, 6-3, 6-1, and TCU's Kurzban, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, in flight three.

Justin Schlageter defeated Texas' Chih Chi Huang, 7-6 (5), 7-5, avenging an earlier loss to Huang at the TCU Invite.

Jonathan Sheehy took out Tech's Franco Ribero in a thriller, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in flight two.

In doubles, Schlageter and Hotard defeated Isaac Arevalo and Connor Johnson (Texas Tech) 8-3 while Han and Sheehy rolled past TCU's Feanley and OSU's Etienne Donnet, also 8-3.

Beiler and Rodriguez defeated TCU's Jake Fearnley and Eduardo Roldan 8-5 before taking out Longhorns Talluri and Nevin Armilli, 8-7 (2).

The Sooners will return to the court in January for spring duals. A schedule will be released at a later date.
