MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Oklahoma volleyball team put up a valiant effort against No. 13 Kansas State, but could not pull off the five-set comeback as they fell 3-2 Friday night inside Bramlage Coliseum.
OU fell to 2-6 on the season while K-State improved to 5-3. The Wildcats took the match 23-25, 16-25, 25-20, 25-21, 13-15 to earn the season sweep over the Sooners.
Kansas State took the first two sets, but the Sooners fought back to win the next two and force their third five-set match of the season. The Sooners are now 1-2 in five set matches.
The Sooners defense had a strong night with 19.0 blocks to K-State's 7.0.
Kelsey Carrington led the way with a career-high nine blocks, with
Tyler Alcorn getting in on eight.
Sarah Maras and
Sarah Sanders chipped in five blocks apiece.
Keyton Kinley led all players with 26 digs on the night.
Offensively, Sanaa Dotson led OU with 16 kills on a .324 clip and just missed a double-double with eight digs.
Guewe Diouf added 12 kills, Sanders notched seven and Maras tallied six.
Grace Talpash tallied a team-best 17 assists with
Olivia Curtis adding 12 and
Sam Anthony notching nine.
The Wildcats out-killed the Sooners 59-46 on a .169 to .120 clip. K-State also led in digs with 73 to OU's 60.
The teams traded points in the first set, with eight ties and six lead changes. With the teams tied at 18-all, the Wildcats prevailed to take set one, 25-23. K-State ran out to a 7-2 lead in the second set and held the advantage as they took set two, 25-16.
The third set went the way of the Sooners as they staved off a sweep with a 25-20 win. The set saw 11 ties, but OU rattled off a 6-1 run to clinch the set with an
Olivia Curtis service ace. In set four, the Sooners trailed 8-4 early, but fought back to tie things up at 15 and take the lead at 17-15. OU would clinch the fourth set, 25-21, on a Dotson kill and force a decisive fifth set.
The fifth set went back-and-forth early as the teams exchanged points. The Sooners staved off two match points but fell 15-13 in the final set.
The Sooners will continue their four-game road swing with a pair of matches at Iowa State. The teams will play inside Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
