NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma soccer team (0-1-1) battled to a draw with Texas Tech, 2-2, in its home opener Friday night at John Crain Field.
"We've been looking forward to this," said OU head coach Mark Carr on the home opener. "We didn't know if this moment was going to come and for our players to put up a performance like that it was great to see. We learned a lot about our team again, we talked a lot about taking the next step. I think it's clear that this team is hungry, they want to learn, they want to compete and they want to get better. You saw a really solid performance tonight from a hungry team that wants to grow and get better."
There was no lack of action on the pitch with both teams notching a pair of goals. Senior Reagan Glisson broke the scoreless battle in the 42nd minute with OU's first goal of the season and her first goal as a Sooner. The Savannah, Ga., product spun around a defender and found the back of the net from the top of the 18 box.
The Red Raiders (0-1-2) answered with their first goal of the match in the 70th minute courtesy of Charlotte Teeter.
OU had a response in the 82nd minute with a goal off a penalty kick from senior Yuuka Kurosaki following a foul drawn by junior Lauren Tovy. The Sooners would hold the lead until the 89th minute when Teeter registered her second goal of the night on a penalty kick to knot the score up at two.
Each team saw opportunities in both overtimes, with OU getting a look on goal from Glisson in the 98th minute.
The Sooners were narrowly outshot by the Red Raiders 18-16 following a 5-1 advantage at half. Senior Nikki Panas held tough in goal throughout the night with a OU career-high eight saves.
Glisson led OU with four shots on the night including her one goal. Senior Megan Reilly battled for the Sooners, recording three shots, one on goal, in the match. Sophomore Maya McCutcheon registered three shots as well, while senior Bri Amos took a pair, putting one on goal. The Sooners only freshman starter, Cailey England, along with sophomore Cameron Tharp each got one look a piece.
Oklahoma continues its homestand Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. CT versus Iowa State at John Crain Field in Norman. The match will air on FOX Sports Oklahoma.
