ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The No. 1 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team opened a new decade with a victory as they tallied a 197.350 to take home the Collegiate Challenge title.
The Sooners took down No. 4 UCLA (196.575), No. 9 Cal (196.200) and No. 22 Stanford (195.475) in their first of four podium meets this season. Inside the Anaheim Convention Center, the Sooners posted the highest score in the nation on opening weekend.
"We were very pleased with how the day went," head coach K.J. Kindler said." I told them that I am so proud of them. We had some hiccups in warmups, but they stayed totally cool which I thought was remarkable considering we had so many new faces out there. You never know how they are going to react to things or adversity and they really snapped it together; I really loved that about the team. We have a couple people out right now so a lot of people had to step up. This is a big win for us in a lot of different ways."
Senior Maggie Nichols took home the bar title with an incredible 9.975, while junior Anastasia Webb took home a share of the vault title with a 9.9. Nichols posted a 39.625 in the all-around to lead the team, while Webb was close behind with a 39.525. Making her debut in the Crimson and Cream, freshman Ragan Smith notched a 39.275 in the all-around.
Eleven different Sooners competed in the meet with Smith and fellow freshman Jenna Dunn making their collegiate debuts. Every member of the junior class competed at least one event as the Sooners were 24-for-24 on the night.
"So proud of Jenna," Kindler said. "She stepped in at the last minute and a hometown girl from Norman had her parents here to watch her. My heart was a little fluttered after she went because she has grown up watching the Sooners her whole life and probably dreamed of that moment. Now that's over and it is time to move forward and get the 9.9 and 10.0 you are capable of. What an amazing moment for her."
The Sooners rotated in Olympic order, starting with a 49.200 on vault. Webb led the Sooners with a 9.9 on her Yurchenko 1.5, while Nichols added a 9.875. Junior Evy Schoepfer set a career high as she debuted a new vault – a tucked Yurchenko 1.5 – for a 9.875. Senior Jade Degouveia added a 9.8 in the No. 3 spot.
OU rebounded on bars with a strong 49.550, thanks to a 9.975 from Nichols in the anchor position. Nichols received a 10.0 from one judge as she stuck her double layout cold to wrap up an exciting rotation.
Smith was phenomenal in the No. 5 spot, also sticking her double layout to earn a career high 9.95 as she made her debut in the Crimson and Cream. Moving from the leadoff position in 2019 to the No. 4 spot this year, Webb was steady and confident as always with a stuck landing for a 9.9.
"I've said this about Anastasia before: sometimes she goes a little bit unnoticed and you should take notice of her," Kindler said. "She is a beautiful athlete, she is powerful and graceful; very rarely do you get that combination. She is a gamer. I was really proud of her tonight. She has some new things she is doing out there, especially on balance beam; we've adjusted that routine. She has new floor, so it is great to see her be successful. I think she can contend for an all-around title."
Making their debuts in the bar lineup, Degouveia and sophomore Jordan Draper each recorded strong scores for Oklahoma. Degouveia notched a 9.875, while Draper added a 9.85. In the leadoff spot, Karrie Thomas tallied a 9.825.
The Sooners notched a 49.225 on beam, led by a 9.9 from Smith. Leading off her second event, Thomas was steady and confident as she recorded a 9.85. Webb added a 9.825 to her strong night and specialist Carly Woodard tallied a 9.8 in the No. 3 spot. Nichols anchored with a 9.85 and a stuck landing.
OU wrapped up its season-opening victory on floor with a 49.375. Nichols had the high score of the night with a 9.925. Webb concluded her evening with a 9.9 as she tallied three scored of 9.9 or better on the night to lead the Sooners. Degouveia added a 9.875, while sophomore Emma LaPinta debuted new confidence in her incredible tumbling and dance for a 9.850. Draper added a 9.825 as she led off the rotation.
"It was so obvious how much Emma has grown the second she stepped into her beginning pose," Kindler said. "There was a look of confidence on her face that I haven't seen before. I haven't seen her perform with such spunk. She was owning every single dance move, every single tumbling pass. I really enjoyed watching her out there and I think she really enjoyed it. I think that was a little bit missing last year; so many nerves and she really never enjoyed it. That floor routine she definitely enjoyed."
The Sooners will travel to Tempe, Ariz., on Jan. 11 to take on Arizona State at 5:30 p.m. CT. The meet will air on ESPNU.
