Murray to Participate in All-Star Challenge

January 23, 2020 | Football

NORMAN — Former University of Oklahoma linebacker Kenneth Murray is one of four players from the Big 12 Conference who will participate in the 2020 State Farm All-Star Football Challenge that will air Friday, Jan. 31 on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. CT.

The skills competition will feature 24 of college football's brightest stars divided into six teams based on their college conference. Each team will consist of four players from the same conference that will compete for conference supremacy in a series of skills competitions. Joining the Big 12 as conferences that will be represented are the ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC. Also, a "Wild Card" team consisting of four of the best players outside of the Power Five will take part.

Each player will individually participate in a timed event, and then finish with a full team event. All events will be timed and have individual winners, which will compile into a cumulative score to determine the winning team. For example, the quarterbacks from each team will compete against each other to win their competition. But ultimately, their time will be added to the times of the other competitors on their conference-designated team to produce a final team score.

Individual events in the 2020 State Farm All-Star Football Challenge include a quarterback accuracy competition, an obstacle course, a strength challenge and a hands competition. To conclude the program, the players will participate in a team competition.

Murray started all 42 of his career games the last three years and helped Oklahoma to a 36-6 record (.857), three Big 12 championships and three College Football Playoff appearances. He finished his OU career with 335 tackles and 37.0 tackles for loss. He is tied for 11th in school history in career tackles (ninth among linebackers) and ranks eighth at OU in career sacks by a linebacker (9.5).

A 2019 second-team AFCA and a third-team AP All-American, Murray, who is from Missouri City, Texas, earned first-team All-Big 12 accolades from the league's coaches and media. The semifinalist for the Bednarik and Butkus Awards and the Lott IMPACT Trophy started led the team with 102 tackles and 17 tackles for loss.

Past Sooner participants in the All-Star Football Challenge are receiver Mark Clayton (2005), quarterback Jason White (2005), receiver Juaquin Iglesias (2009), running back Samaje Perine (2017), receiver Dede Westbrook (2017), tight end Mark Andrews (2018), offensive lineman Orlando Brown (2018) and defensive end/linebacker Ogbonnia Okoronkwo (2018).
