NORMAN — University of Oklahoma redshirt freshman kicker Gabe Brkic, the only FBS kicker to make all of his field goal and extra-point attempts this season, was named to the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America Team, the FWAA announced Monday.
Brkic took over kicking duties prior to the Sooners' game against Texas Tech on Sept. 28 and went 17 for 17 on field goal attempts and 51 for 51 on PATs. He ended the season a perfect 69 for 69 on combined place kicks. He is the first OU kicker to end a season with a 1.000 field goal percentage.
The Chardon, Ohio, product converted 11 field goals of longer than 30 yards, including four longer than 40 yards. He made multiple field goals in six games, including four at Kansas State. His 50-yard field goal at Kansas State was OU's longest since 2017 and he became the first OU kicker since 2011 to make four field goals in a game since 2011.
Brkic connected on two field goals in the Sooners' historic 34-31 come-from-behind win at Baylor on Nov. 16, including the 31-yarder with 1:45 remaining that provided the winning margin. He converted all three attempts against the Bears in the Big 12 Championship, including a 44-yarder that tied for his second-longest kick of the season.
Brkic is Oklahoma's 14th FWAA Freshman All-American since the team was established in 2001, and the third kicker to earn Freshman All-America recognition from the FWAA (Michael Hunnicutt in 2011 and Austin Seibert in 2015). The Sooners have produced a Freshman All-American in six of the last seven years and in three straight seasons.
