NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's basketball team used a second-half spark to keep its Big 12 momentum going with an 81-72 win over Iowa State Saturday. After trailing at halftime,
Taylor Robertson and
Madi Williams poured in points in double figures to spur the offense.
Robertson scored 19 of her 22 points and Williams poured in 12 of her 19 in the second to boost OU the Sooners to victory.
With the win, OU improves to 9-6 overall and 2-1 against the Big 12 while the Cyclones move to 9-5 and 1-2 in league play.
"We beat a really good team today," said head coach Sherri
Coale.
"Iowa State is very volatile offensively … I thought our attention to defending all of their stuff was really good. I thought overall, our effort and our ability to manage and sometimes machinate energy was important … I thought we showed a lot of heart, a lot of toughness and a great degree of focus."
Robertson's 22 points marked her seventh consecutive game with 20+. The sophomore now owns the school record for most consecutive 20+-points performances, surpassing the six-game mark set by teammate Ana
Llanusa last season.
Williams showed off her range as she went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc in her 19-point performance. The Fort Worth product also pulled down eight rebounds in the contest.
"I think what was great today was Madi asserting herself as a scorer," said
Coale. "She just was incredibly discerning in the shots she took and made big ones at big times. I thought her play today all around was first team All-Big 12 kind of play – I just thought she was fantastic."
Freshman
Gabby Gregory was again a double-digit contributor as she notched 16 points to go with seven rebounds.
Mandy Simpson had 12 points on the day and tied Williams for the team-high in rebounds with eight. The junior dished four assists on the day.
