Robertson Scores 31, OU Upends WVU

January 15, 2020 | Women's Basketball

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Taylor Robertson made eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 31 points to help Oklahoma beat No. 17 West Virginia 73-49 on Wednesday night.

With the win, OU improves to 10-6 overall and 3-1 against the Big 12. West Virginia moves to 13-2 and 3-1 against the league as the Sooners snapped WVU's nine-game winning streak.

"I was really pleased with our team's performance," said head coach Sherri Coale. "Even though we started off pretty cold, we just stuck with our commitment to the process, especially defensively. I thought we did a great job on the glass. That's where this team has improved the most."

The Oklahoma defense held West Virginia to 23.7% shooting from the field, OU's lowest opponent field goal percentage this season. The Sooners held West Virginia to just 49 points; the Mountaineers had averaged 70.6 per game prior to Wednesday.

Robertson, who is the national leader in made 3s with 86, extended her program record to eight straight games with at least 20 points.

"This kid is unbelievable the way she scores the basketball," said Coale of Robertson. "I don't have any words for that."

Madi Williams added 15 points with eight rebounds and Mandy Simpson grabbed 11 boards for Oklahoma (10-6, 3-1 Big 12), which won its third straight conference game.

"(Madi) is our heart and soul," Coale said. "The motor, and the toughness and the versatility she showed in the mismatches she causes are a big reason why we've won a few in a row."

Robertson scored 15 points in the first half, with four 3-pointers, to help Oklahoma build a 29-22 lead. She banked in her seventh 3-pointer to beat the third-quarter buzzer for a 54-34 lead.

Tynice Martin and Kysre Gondrezick each had a team-high eight points for West Virginia which lost its first home game of the season. The duo combined to make 4 of 25 shots as the Mountaineers were held to 23.7% from the field, including 1 of 13 from 3-point range.

Prior to Wednesday, Oklahoma's last 20-point win away from home was in 2010 against Kentucky in the Elite Eight. The victory was also good for OU's second upset of a ranked opponent this season as the Sooners took out then-No. 25 LSU on Dec.7 in Norman.
