Hurts Named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

September 30, 2019 | Football

NORMAN – Oklahoma senior quarterback Jalen Hurts has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after accounting for 485 yards and four touchdowns in the Sooners' 55-16 win over Texas Tech on Saturday.

In less than three quarters of work, Hurts completed 17 of 24 passes for a career-high 415 yards and three touchdowns and rushed nine times for 70 yards and a score to lead OU past the Red Raiders for the eighth straight time. He joined Patrick Mahomes (Texas Tech) and Trevone Boykin (TCU) as the only quarterbacks in Big 12 history to throw for 415-plus yards, register three passing touchdowns, rush for at least 70 yards and score a rushing touchdown in a conference game.

Hurts also became the first Big 12 quarterback since Mahomes with three completions of at least 60 yards in a game. He registered 368 total yards in the first half (308 passing, 60 rushing), the third-highest total in any half in school history. His 249.0 pass efficiency rating stands as the third best nationally this season (min. 24 pass attempts). He has recorded a passing efficiency rating of at least 245.0 in all four games this season and is the only FBS player since at least 1996 to record more than two such outings (min. 18 attempts) in a season.

This is Hurts' second Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honor (he won both player and newcomer honors on Sept. 3), and OU's fourth Big 12 honor this year. Brendan Radley-Hiles was named the league's defensive player of the week on Sept. 9.

No. 6/4 Oklahoma (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) is on the road to face Kansas (2-3, 0-2 Big 12) on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT. The contest will be televised nationally on ABC.
