OU Drops Big 12 Opener at TCU
September 26, 2019 | Soccer
FORT WORTH, TEXAS – The Oklahoma soccer team dropped its Big 12 opener, 2-0, to TCU Thursday night at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
For just the third time this season the Sooners (5-4-2, 0-1-0 Big 12) were held off the scoreboard as the TCU defense limited them to just one shot on goal.
TCU (7-3-0, 1-0-0 Big 12) notched both goals in the first half as Yazmeen Ryan converted a pair of penalty kick opportunities. The first goal came in the sixth minute and the second in the 21st minute of play.
"It was a strange game to have two PK's in the first twenty minutes," head coach Matt Potter said. "That was the difference. Statistically, we're even, opportunities created, we're even, the result is a tough one. With them being ahead they could adjust tactics and we simply didn't show the cutting edge that we have thus far this season to get back in the game. We will regroup and look to perform Sunday In Lubbock."
OU had opportunities to get on the scoreboard late in the first half. In the 29th minute, senior Kristina O'Donnell sent in a low ball to the near post, but her attempt was saved by the TCU keeper. In the 33rd minute, sophomore Lauren Tovy took a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that was blocked. Off the rebound, junior Yuuka Kurosaki sent a shot out high.
The Sooner defense finished strong as they held the Horned Frogs off the board for the remainder of the game and junior keeper Nikki Panas recorded four saves.
The teams finished tied in shots with 11 each, but TCU held a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal. Tovy led the Sooners with three shots on the night, while O'Donnell and junior Erika Yost each notched a pair.
The Sooners will head to Lubbock, Texas, to face Texas Tech on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
