ANNAPOLIS, Md. — In its inaugural visit to the U.S. Naval Academy, the No. 2 Oklahoma men's gymnastics team topped the No. 10 Navy Midshipmen, 416.700-400.600 for its 111th consecutive victory. The Sooners won five of six event titles and OU gymnasts swept all six individual event titles.
“The Naval Academy is an amazing place to be for a gymnastics competition,” said Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams. “We really enjoyed the environment and found that it was a great meet for us. Without Genki (Suzuki), our pommel horse team was a little weak at the beginning but after that, we got rolling and did a pretty good job.”
OU began the afternoon on pommel horse, putting up a 64.500. Senior co-captain Yul Moldauer tallied a 14.200 to claim his first event title of the day. Fellow senior co-captain Levi Anderson and junior Tanner Justus contributed with solid sets of 13.100 and 13.000. The rotation was the only event the Sooners did not win as a team.
Oklahoma registered a strong 71.300 on floor exercise in the second rotation. All five Sooners in the lineup put up scores of 13.800-plus. Sophomore Gage Dyer took his first event title of the day with a 14.750 routine. Two Sooner freshmen chipped in solid sets with Vitaliy Guimaraes and Spencer Goodell scoring 14.500 and 13.900, respectively. Goodell's tally was good for a career high. Justus assisted with a season-high 14.350.
Moving to vault in the third rotation, OU was impressive yet again on the event it leads the nation in. All five Sooners went 14.000-plus, led by Guimaraes and junior Matt Wenske's event-winning 14.800s. The totals rank as a career high for Guimaraes and a season high for Wenske, making his first appearance in the vault lineup since January. Dyer and sophomore Alexei Vernyi put up 14.600 and 14.500 respective scores to help the Sooners to a 72.700.
"I feel that it's pretty significant to at least be tied for the third all-time consecutive win streak of any sport in NCAA history. I'm impressed with my team."
- Mark Williams
The Sooners scored a 69.850 in the fourth rotation on still rings, marking their third event crown on Saturday. Moldauer won his second title of the day with a 14.700 routine. Seniors Peter Daggett and Jake Maloley contributed with tallies of 14.200 and 13.900, respectively. Wenske registered his second season high of the meet with a 13.550 in the leadoff spot.
In the fifth rotation on high bar, OU put up a solid 70.100 to win another event title. Dyer won his second individual crown of the meet with a career-high 14.700. Two other Sooners went 14-plus with Anderson and Vernyi scoring respective totals of 14.350 and 14.050. Vernyi's mark was a career high for the sophomore.
The final rotation on parallel bars saw Oklahoma register a 68.250 to cap the meet with its fifth event title. Moldauer anchored with an event-winning 14.700 routine to claim his third event victory on the afternoon. Wenske and Daggett helped out with respective sets of 13.650 and 13.600. Anderson and Goodell, making their first appearances in the P-bars lineup since the beginning of February, assisted with sets of 13.200 and 13.100.
With consecutive win No. 111, the Sooners match the University of Connecticut women's basketball streak from 2014-2017, tying for the third-longest winning streak in NCAA history.
“I'm happy to put another win in the column,” concluded Williams. “I feel that it's pretty significant to at least be tied for the third all-time consecutive win streak of any sport in NCAA history. I'm impressed with my team. We still need to do some work before the postseason but overall, we're pretty happy.”
The Sooners continue their road swing with their final regular season dual meet on Saturday, March 23, at the University of California, Berkeley. Cal ranks 11th in both the Road to Nationals rankings and CGA coaches poll. A victory over the Golden Bears would solidify a fifth-consecutive undefeated regular season for Williams and the Sooners.
