SAN DIEGO – First baseman Tyler Hardman hit a grand slam and drove in six runs and Cade Cavalli was excellent over seven innings, as the Oklahoma baseball team defeated San Diego 6-1 Friday night at Fowler Park in the Tony Gwynn Legacy tournament.

The Sooners (5-0) trailed 1-0 and had no hits until the seventh inning when shortstop Brandon Zaragoza reached on an infield single. After catcher Justin Mitchell singled to right and second baseman Conor McKenna was hit by a pitch, Hardman drove a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall to put OU ahead 4-1. Hardman added a two-run triple in the ninth inning.

Cavalli (1-0) struck out seven batters over 7.0 frames, holding the Toreros scoreless after the first inning.

“The kids had a lot of resolve and they stayed with it,” Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. “Their pitcher was really good, he's going to be a first rounder. Cavalli got better as the game kept going. That was a sign of being in control of yourself and understanding what you need to do on the mound when it's a 1-0 game. Once we got the momentum, we sustained it when Cavalli went out and punched out the side in the bottom of the seventh. That was huge.”

San Diego (4-2) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when designated hitter Max Jung-Goldberg doubled and scored on a groundout to first by shortstop Cody Jefferis. From there, Cavalli and the OU defense shut down the Toreros. The Sooners turned double plays in the third and fourth innings, and Cavalli ended his outing with four consecutive strikeouts. He punched out the side in the seventh after his team scored four runs in the top half.

Until the seventh, a walk by right fielder Blake Brewster was the only OU baserunner. Zaragoza's chopper toward short started the inning and began a rally. Hardman's homer was the fourth of his career and the first of the season for the Sooners.

In the ninth, Mitchell drew a walk and McKenna, a native of Carlsbad, Calif., reached on an error. Hardman then drove a triple deep into the right center field gap, scoring both runs to extend the lead to 6-1.

Ledgend Smith pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Jason Ruffcorn relieved him with a runner on base in the ninth and closed out the game. The Sooners turned two more double plays in the eighth and ninth innings, spinning four in the game.

USD starter Chris Murphy (1-1) struck out 12 batters over 6.1 innings in the loss.

Oklahoma continues at the Tony Gwynn Legacy on Saturday when it plays at San Diego State at 8 p.m. CT at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
