SAN DIEGO – Nathan Wiles struck out 10 batters over seven innings and Milan Walla drove home Brady Harlan in the fifth inning for the only run of the game, as the Oklahoma baseball team defeated San Diego State 1-0 Saturday night in the Tony Gwynn Legacy tournament at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Sooners improved to 6-0 on the season while the Aztecs fell to 4-2.
Wiles' 10 strikeouts matched his career high set in last season's NCAA regional win over Samford, and he allowed just four hits and three walks in the contest to improve to 2-0 on the season. Wyatt Olds pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Jason Ruffcorn earned his third save of the year with a perfect ninth inning.
“Wiles was executing tonight, and when he has that mindset you just have to roll with it,” Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. “I was really proud of him. He got out of it for a couple of innings there, and then settled back in. You never really see him walk three guys in a game. He got in a quick rhythm early, and our defense played outstanding. He started executing pitches one after the other and it was really fun to watch.”
Harlan led off the fifth inning with OU's first hit of the game, dropping a single into shallow right center field. After moving to second on a wild pitch, he raced home on Walla's line drive single into center field.
“We got the leadoff guy on, got him over and got a big hit by Walla,” Johnson said. “(Milan) stuck with his approach and got a big hit. It was good to see Brady get in there. He's fit in with this team ever since he got to campus and that's really good for us because he's a dynamic athlete too. We just have to keep plowing and keep growing day to day.”
Wiles struck out two batters in four of his seven innings, and only once allowed a runner to reach third base. That was a walk in the sixth inning that moved to third with two outs, and Wiles struck out the next batter to end the frame. SDSU starter Harrison Pyatt (0-1) took the loss.
The Sooners close out the weekend against Cal State Fullerton at noon CT Sunday at Fowler Park.
