December 04, 2019 | Football

NORMAN — Offensive lineman Creed Humphrey, quarterback Jalen Hurts and defensive lineman LaRon Stokes claimed individual awards and Oklahoma garnered a league-high 11 All-Big 12 First- or Second-Team selections, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday. Selections were made by the league's head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players.

Humphrey was named the Big 12 Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year, the fourth consecutive offensive-lineman-of-the-year award for the Sooners. Hurts was voted the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year and Stokes the Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year. OU has won 46 individual Big 12 awards, the most in the 24-year history of the league (Kansas State is second with 34).

Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb was a unanimous All-Big 12 selection and was joined on the first-team by Humphrey, Hurts and linebacker Kenneth Murray. Seven Sooners were named to the All-Big 12 Second Team: running back Kennedy Brooks, placekicker Gabe Brkic, offensive lineman Adrian Ealy, defensive lineman Neville Gallimore, H-back Jeremiah Hall, cornerback Parnell Motley and defensive lineman Ronnie Perkins.

Hurts is Oklahoma's fourth Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year and second quarterback honoree (Josh Heupel, 1999). A graduate transfer from Alabama, he leads the Big 12 in total offense (380.3 yards per game), passing efficiency (202.3), completion percentage (.719), yards per pass attempt (11.7; first in FBS), yards per completion (16.3; first in FBS), points responsible for per game (25.2; first in FBS) and passing touchdowns (31). In Big 12 games, he also led the league in scoring (10.0 points per game).

The senior from Houston, Texas, is the only FBS player since 1996 to post a passing efficiency rating of 245.0 or better five times in a season (minimum 15 attempts), and the only FBS player with more than three games this season of two-plus rushing touchdowns and two-plus passing TDs (he has five such performances). He is just five total TDs shy of the school record of 55 set by Sam Bradford in 2008.

Stokes is the fifth Sooner and first since 2005 to be named Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year. The Tulsa, Okla., native has made a significant impact on the defensive line during his first season at OU. A junior who transferred from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, Stokes has started nine of 12 games at tackle, recording 13 tackles (six solo, seven assists) and 4.5 tackles for loss.

Humphrey claimed OU's fourth straight Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year honor, joiningĀ Orlando BrownĀ in 2016 and 2017 and Dru Samia in 2018. The redshirt sophomore center has started all 12 games this season and 24 in his career. Humphrey and All-Big 12 Second Team selection Adrian Ealy anchor an OU offensive line that was named a Joe Moore Award semifinalist for the second straight year. The unit paves the way for a Sooners offense that ranks first nationally in total offense (564.3 ypg), yards per pass attempt (11.7), yards per play (8.4) and third with its 6.4 yards per rush.

Oklahoma boasts a total of 12 honorees among the first and second teams and individual awards. Baylor was second with 10 overall honorees, followed by TCU with nine, Iowa State with eight, Oklahoma State with six and Kansas State, Texas Tech and West Virginia with five each. Texas had four and Kansas had two honorees.

Lamb and Murray garnered their first All-Big 12 First Team honors. A junior from Richmond, Texas, Lamb ranks third nationally with 14 receiving touchdowns, 10th with his 20.7 yards per catch and 19th with his 94.1 receiving yards per game despite ranking 94th with just 4.5 catches per contest. Murray, a junior from Missouri City, Texas, leads the Sooners in tackles (85) and tackles for loss (co-leader at 13.0), and has accounted for 3.0 sacks, three pass breakups and four quarterback hurries. He ranked sixth in the Big 12 conference play with 10.0 tackles for loss (nine solo TFLs).

Brooks, who was an honorable mention choice last year, received his first All-Big 12 recognition. He leads the conference and ranks third nationally in yards per carry (7.2) and ranks fourth in the league with his 917 rushing yards. The redshirt sophomore from Mansfield, Texas, averages 83.4 rushing yards per game this season, but has rushed for 534 yards (133.5 per game) over the last four contests.

Brkic took over kicking duties prior to the Sooners' game against Texas Tech on Sept. 28 and is 14 for 14 on field goal attempts and 45 for 45 on PATs. The redshirt freshman from Chardon, Ohio, is the only placekicker nationally who has made all of his field goal and extra point tries this season (59 for 59).

Gallimore, a senior from Ottawa, Ontario, has started all 12 games this season and 36 of his 50 career contests. This season he has been credited with 25 tackles (17 solo, eight assists), 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, two forced fumbles and a pass breakup.

Hall, a redshirt sophomore in his first season starting for the Sooners, has caught 15 passes for 164 yards (10.9 average). The Charlotte, N.C., product is tied for third on the team with his three touchdown receptions.

Motley has accounted for 34 total tackles (27 solo, one for loss) this season and leads the Sooners with four forced fumbles and 11 pass breakups. The senior from Washington, D.C., paces the Big 12 in fumbles forced, is tied for third in pass breakups and tied for fifth with 12 passes defended (11 breakups, one interception). All four of his forced fumbles came against conference opponents.

Perkins is tied for sixth in the Big 12 in both sacks (6.0) and tackles for loss (13.0). He has done the most damage against conference competition, tallying 11.0 TFLs (third in the league) and 5.0 sacks (tied for fourth). The sophomore from St. Louis, Mo., is third on the team with 37 tackles and four QB hurries. His biggest game was at Baylor, when he tallied career highs of 4.0 TFLs and 3.0 sacks.

Several Sooners also earned honorable mention recognition at their respective positions: sophomore defensive back Pat Fields, Lamb (kick/punt returner), redshirt sophomore punter Reeves Mundschau, redshirt freshman defensive lineman Jalen Redmond, sophomore defensive back Delarrin Turner-Yell and sophomore linebacker DaShaun White. In addition, Brkic (special teams), Gallimore (defensive lineman), Hurts (offensive player), Lamb (offensive player), Murray (defensive player) and Redmond (defensive freshman) received at least one vote each for the respective individual awards.

Oklahoma has placed at least four players on the All-Big 12 First Team every season since 2000, and has boasted at least one all-conference player every season since 1926 (93 years). OU has only had one season when playing in a conference without first-team honors (1925), marking 103 of 104 seasons.
