Sooners Hand Wildcats First Loss

November 26, 2019 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's basketball team handed Abilene Christian its first loss of the season Tuesday as the Sooners topped the Wildcats 78-65 inside Lloyd Noble Center.

With the win, OU improves to 4-2 on the year while ACU moves to 4-1.

"I was pleased, for the most part, with how we defended them," said head coach Sherri Coale.

"We had some great downs for sure ... I thought we played really hard and I thought the second half, we did the things we talked about in the half-time locker room, about how to cover down and recover off of penetration back-out to shoot. I'm really pleased with our effort."

The Sooners shot 46.6% from the field and 52.2% from deep. Freshman Gabby Gregory had a career night, recording 18 points on 5-for-6 shooting and went 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. The Tulsa, Okla., native was also perfect from the charity stripe, going 6-for-6.

"This is probably the first time I felt like myself playing in a game," said Gregory. "For me, I was more proud of myself on defense. I don't think I've played that good of defense in my life. I think I've been working really hard in practice and so I think it was just time for me to show what I've been doing in practice in the game."

Taylor Robertson led the Sooners' scoring with 21 points. The McPherson, Kansas, product drained seven pf 12 shots from deep and was just one 3-pointer short of her career high. Sophomore Nydia Lampkin didn't miss a shot on the night, tallying eight points on four-for-four shooting.

"She just gets it off so fast," said Coale of Robertson's 3-pointers. "[She's] almost better under distress then when she is wide open as a result of being under distress the whole time. She got several in transition and that helps us in a number of ways … They were not only important, but timely."

Madi Williams recorded her third double-double of the season as she totaled 17 points to go with 11 rebounds. Williams shot 6-for-13 from the field and hit a pair of treys on the night.
