NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's basketball took Missouri State to the wire Thursday night but came up just short in the Preseason WNIT semifinals as the Lady Bears prevailed 96-90 at Lloyd Noble Center.
OU fell to 2-1 on the season while Missouri State improved to 4-0. The Lady Bears have now won 13 straight on the road.
"What an exciting basketball game," said OU head coach
Sherri Coale. [Missouri State] is really good team that obviously went to the Sweet 16 last year, has a lot of experience back and played with a lot of confidence. We just got off to a great start then got foul trouble across the entire roster and couldn't ever really recover from the break in rhythm there.
"I thought we fought back at the end and did some great stuff … We've got to build our discipline, we've got to build our confidence, we've got to trust the process and do what we do and by the end of the year we'll look back and appreciate the opportunity that we had tonight because it's going to make us better."
Ana Llanusa once again led the charge for the Sooners, scoring 30 points on the night for her second straight game with 25-plus. Three more players joined her in double figures.
Taylor Robertson finished with 22 points on 6-for-10 shooting from 3-point range,
Kamryn Lemon had her first game in double figures as a Sooner with 17 and
Madi Williams tallied 12.
The Sooners came out firing in the first quarter as they scored a program-record 37 points in the opening period. OU shot 78% (7 for 9) from behind the arc in the first quarter and led 51-39 at the half. Missouri State answered in the third quarter, scoring 34 points while holding OU to 18. The Lady Bears led by as many as nine in the fourth quarter, but OU closed the gap to three as Lemon hit a 3-pointer with 1:30 to go to make the score 89-86. The Sooners would score twice more but it wasn't enough.
Missouri State was led by Alexa Willard's 27 points and Mya Bhinhar's 21. The Lady Bears shot 53.6% from the field to OU's 52.5% and outrebounded the Sooners 39-26.
OU returns to Lloyd Noble Center on Wednesday, Nov. 20, to host Stephen F. Austin at 11 a.m. CT for Field Trip Day. An estimated 6,000 local elementary schoolers will be in attendance.
Season ticket holders who plan on attending Wednesday's game should RSVP to the OU Athletics Ticket Office by calling (800-456-4668).
