NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's basketball team schooled Stephen F. Austin Wednesday, topping the Lady Jacks 75-62 inside Lloyd Noble Center on Field Trip Day.
6,875 local elementary school students looked on as the Sooners powered past SFA to improve to 3-1 on the season. The Lady Jacks move to 2-2.
"The energy that we have from 6,000-plus elementary school children in the arena is why we play the game," said head coach
Sherri Coale.
"The energy, opportunity and platform to expose our crowd to young kids and hopefully all these kids go home and tell mom and dad they want to go to an OU women's basketball game and inspire kids in the audience to participate in sports. It was a great opportunity day and appreciate the support from the public school system and building the curriculum around the state. It was great for us. I appreciate Stephen F. Austin taking the early tip-time and being part of future generations of women's basketball."
Three players scored in double figures as
Ana Llanusa and
Taylor Robertson led the way with 19 apiece and newcomer
Kamryn Lemon had 10. Robertson, always sharp from beyond the arc, went 4-for-6 from three.
"We were just able to feed off of the energy," said sophomore guard
Madi Williams, who tied her career high with 16 boards on the day.
OU held Stephen F. Austin to just 18 points on 18.9% shooting (7-for-37) in the first half, marking the first time the Sooners have held an opponent to less than 20 points in a first half since Nov. 21, 2017 at Colorado State. SFA scored only six points in the second quarter for the first time since last season when OU held SMU to eight in the first quarter on Dec. 22, 2018.
OU hits the road for the first time this season Saturday as the Sooners travel to Houston. The matchup with the Cougars will tip at 2 p.m. CT and will be available for streaming on
