November 13, 2019 | Men's Basketball
NORMAN – University of Oklahoma head men's basketball coach Lon Kruger announced Wednesday the signing of 2020 guard Trey Phipps to a national letter of intent. A 6-2 shooting guard from Tulsa, Okla., Phipps begins his final season in high school as one of the best shooters in the country.
The MVP of the 2019 OSSAA State Tournament, Phipps scored 42 points with eight 3-pointers in the Oklahoma 6A State Championship to help win the title at Booker T Washington. He's been a First Team All-Conference and All-District selection the past two seasons.
"Trey is a terrific competitor who is a very hard worker and shoots the ball extremely well," said Kruger. "He has a passion to be at Oklahoma and will fit in very well right off the bat. We're delighted to have him."
Phipps averaged 18.3 points his junior season and has totaled 1,324 points in his first three years of high school.
In 2019, Phipps led the Under Armor Association U17 AAU circuit in 3-pointers by sinking 4.1 per game at a 55.9% clip (57-of-102). His 18.5 points per game were the third most in the Under Armor Association.
The guard averaged 18.0 points as a sophomore in 2017-18 while Booker T Washington finished as the state runner-up. Phipps produced 24 points and seven boards in the 2018 state title game.
"Becoming a Sooner is something I always dreamed about as a kid," said Phipps. "Being able to have the opportunity to play at OU is something I'm extremely grateful and excited for."
Phipps' father, Conley Phipps, played at Oklahoma in 1985-86 and 1986-87. He reached the NCAA Tournament in both seasons, including an appearance in the 1987 Sweet 16.
