NORMAN — Oklahoma junior linebacker Kenneth Murray has been named a nominee for the 2019 Wuerffel Trophy, the national college football award recognizing community service.
Murray, a 2019 team captain, has been as active off the field as on it, displaying a spirit of service throughout his time at OU. He is an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes serving as a member of the leadership team and as a speaker at several FCA events. He makes regular visits to The Children's Hospital at the OU Medical Center and has participated in the Art with a Heart program, which helps raise funds for children's activities at the hospital through children's artwork.
The Missouri City, Texas, product has also worked with local youth through the Boys and Girls Club of Norman, the J.D. McCarty Center and the Sparrow Project, playing the role of a date to give special needs teenagers the opportunity to enjoy prom. Additionally, Murray has volunteered with Shane's Hope, helping to make soap for the underprivileged, and at the Norman Veterans Center, visiting the residents under long-term care.
Murray's passion for being the best player and best team leader he can be is the same passion that led him to rush from his car to the side of the road to assist two women in a medical emergency. He gave CPR to an unconscious woman he did not know and assisted both women – who were deaf – until paramedics arrived. His action possibly saved her life as she was transferred to the hospital in a fully conscious state.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented annually to the Football Bowl Subdivision player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback, Danny Wuerffel, from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy has honored over 1,200 nominees since its inception in 2005.
Voting for the Wuerffel Trophy is performed by a national selection committee that includes college football television and print media, industry notables, former head coaches and prior Wuerffel Trophy recipients.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 5, 2019, and finalists announced on Nov. 18, 2019. The formal announcement of the 2019 Wuerffel Trophy recipient is scheduled to be made on Dec. 10, 2019 at the National Football Foundation's festivities in New York City.
Past winners of the Wuerffel Trophy include former Sooners Gabe Ikard (2013), Ty Darlington (2015) and Trevor Knight (2016; attended Texas A&M that year).
