LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Oklahoma soccer team dropped its Big 12 opener Friday night in a narrow 2-1 double-overtime loss to Kansas at Rock Chalk Park.
As the seconds ticked down in the second overtime period, it looked as though the Sooners would finish the night with their second draw of the season. With just 54 seconds remaining, Katie McClure took a shot from two-yards out to give the Jayhawks the overtime victory.
“I'm proud of the group,” head coach Matt Potter said. “Especially to be up a goal at half against a talented Kansas team. The endeavor coupled with a little better execution gives us encouragement to turn this one into wins moving forward. As competitors and as a team, this is the character we have seen within the group and we will go again.”
The Sooners took the lead in the first half, giving them at least one goal scored in all 10 games this season. It's the second longest streak in program history, with the 1998 team putting together 13-straight games with at least one goal scored.
In the 17th minute, redshirt junior Kaylee Dao put the Sooners on the board with an incredible diving header.
The Sooners earned a corner kick prior to the goal with the ensuing shot from redshirt sophomore Lauren Haivala going wide. Haivala's shot went back to senior Marissa McMahand who was still in the corner of the field.
McMahand corralled the wide shot, sending a cross into the box. Dao came flying from six yards out, heading the ball into the far post past the Kansas goalkeeper.
In the 45th minute, the Sooner defense stepped up in a huge way to keep the lead heading into the locker room. A flurry of action happened just four yards out from the goal, but seniors Jordan Hobart and Paige Welch were able to clear the ball, forcing the Jayhawks to send a shot well over the cross bar in the last seconds.
In the 60th minute, Kansas tied the game with a goal from Elise Reina. Sophomore goalkeeper McKinley Crone made a diving save, but Reina collected the rebound to find the back of the net.
In the 58th minute, sophomore Erika Yost just missed her second goal of the year. Yost collected the ball on the far side, sending a cross that went off the post at the last second.
In the 71st minute, another set piece almost led to an OU goal as Dao's point-blank shot sailed right into the hands of the Kansas keeper.
In the 100th minute, junior Ivanna Rivas sent a last second shot over the cross bar in an attempt to end the game with a golden goal.
The Sooners will head to Kansas State for a Sunday afternoon matchup. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. CT and the game can be viewed on Fox College Sports Central or K-StateHD.TV.
