NORMAN The Oklahoma soccer team earned its first victory of the season in dominating fashion, defeating Illinois State, 7-1, Friday night at John Crain Field.

It's the first time since 2015 that the Sooners have scored six or more goals in a game and the first time since 2016 that they scored four goals in a half.

“What I was really encouraged by was the endeavor across the board from all the players that took part this evening,” head coach Matt Potter said. “The encouraging thing was the way that we figured out their tactics early on, and that shows our soccer IQ is evolving as we are really in the early stages of the season, but it was pretty encouraging to see how we solved the game tactically. Some new people got their first minutes today, so overall job well done. It is pleasing to score at home. It is a good night to be a Sooner. Hopefully this can be the platform to spring us to further victories.”

Sophomore Erika Yost and freshman Hailey Davidson tallied their first career goals in the game. Yost put the Sooners on the board in the 10th minute, scoring from four yards out on a cross from Davidson. Davidson scored in the 21st minute, slotting the ball inside the near post from just six yards out.

An own goal in the 19th minute made it 2-0 Sooners. Yost had a shot attempt and the ball deflected off a Redbird defender into the back of the net.

“I think it's a big confidence builder,” Dao said. “We definitely feel like we're a good enough team to have won a game thus far, but to actually have one under our belts on a Friday night is exciting. We have to get the job done on Sunday, though.”

In the 43rd minute, senior Jordan Hobart recorded her first goal of the year scoring from six yards out as the Sooners converted a corner kick opportunity.

Redshirt junior Kaylee Dao notched a pair of goals for Oklahoma, scoring once in the 58th minute and again in the 61st minute. The first came off a Marissa McMahand corner kick, which Dao headed into the back of the net to make it 4-0 Sooners. Her second goal of the night came off a cross from McMahand at the top of the six yard box. McMahand, who also had the assist on Hobart's goal, finished with three assists on the night, becoming the first Sooner since Anna Crawford in 2015 to accomplish the feat.

“Marissa (McMahand) is a gifted technical player,” Potter said. “There is no question that she's got a God-given gift; she can pretty much put the ball where she wants to. Kaylee Dao is exceptional in the air and finding the opportunity to get on the end of crosses. Clearly it was a good night for the two of them.”

The final goal of the night for Oklahoma came from Emily Parker in the 77th minute. The ISU keeper came off her line, attempting to kick the ball back into open field. Parker would jump at the mistake, going one-on-one and stealing the ball for an easy goal from six yards out.

“It was super rewarding to see Emily Parker's endeavor rewarded by creating and getting her own goal tonight,” Potter said. “She has worked very hard to be in this point and I couldn't be more pleased for her.”

Illinois State scored their lone goal in the 86th minute on a penalty kick from Kiley Czerwinski.

Sophomore goalkeepers McKinley Crone and Paige Hobart each saw action in goal for Oklahoma. Crone played the first 72 minutes with five saves before being relieved by Hobart who made one save.

OU returns to action Sunday against Gonzaga at 3 p.m. CT at John Crain Field.
