Eleven Sooners Named to Academic All-Big 12 Teams

NORMAN —Eleven players from the Oklahoma soccer team have received Academic All-Big 12 recognition, including 10 first-team selections, the conference announced Tuesday.
Seniors Bethany Block (health and exercise science), Jordan Hobart (health and exercise science), Marissa McMahand (health and exercise science), Emily Parker (marketing) and Paige Welch (biomedical engineering), redshirt junior Kaylee Dao (arts and sciences – planned program), juniors Lauren Haivala (communication) and Ivanna Rivas (psychology) and sophomores Emma Ledbetter (pre-physical therapy) and Erika Yost (interior design) were all named to the first team, while sophomore McKinley Crone (finance) earned second-team honors.
Block, Hobart, and Welch were recognized with 4.0 GPAs over the last two semesters. The academic honor is the third for Welch, while Hobart, McMahand, Dao and Rivas were all honored for the second time. This marks the 15th season that at least five Sooners have been included on the first team.
The first team consists of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Sooners will wrap up the regular season Thursday in Waco, Texas, when they face No. 10 Baylor. The Big 12 Tournament kicks off Sunday, Oct. 28, in Kansas City, Mo.
