NORMAN — The Oklahoma football team held its first full-fledged scrimmage of training camp Tuesday evening under the lights on Owen Field.
Head coach Lincoln Riley watched the defense control the action early during the hour-and-20-minute event, before the offense found itself and engineered several scoring drives. The three quarterbacks who saw the field were Baker Mayfield, Austin Kendall and Kyler Murray.
"It was good to get out here and do some live reps after missing them last Saturday (due to the weather)," said Riley immediately after the scrimmage. "There was a lot of excitement and energy the whole time.
"I thought defensively we started out really strong, played well the first several series with a couple three-and-outs. And then offensively we kind of picked it up a little bit in the middle of the scrimmage and had a couple nice drives. So a lot of back-and-forth, and we got some situational work in at the end with some short-yardage and two-minute that I thought went really well on both sides of the ball."
The offense didn't register any points until its fifth possession. That's when Mayfield found Mark Andrews on a downfield strike for a 35-yard score. The redshirt junior tight end shook loose of his defender as he caught the ball and trotted into the end zone.
"We had some broken tackles with some (offensive) guys who ran through some stuff, and then I thought there were some guys who made some really nice open-field tackles, too."

After the defense recorded its third three-and-out in six possessions, Mayfield presided over another TD drive that covered 70 yards.
Kendall led the offense from its own 20-yard line to the defense's 15 on the next drive before it had to settle for a 32-yard field goal by Austin Seibert.
A couple drives later, with Murray under center, sophomore Abdul Adams broke free for a 50-yard run to pay dirt. It looked like the offense would score again on the next possession, but sophomore cornerback Parnell Motley stepped in front of a Mayfield rocket on third-and-goal from the 8, nearly making an interception. Seibert came on for a 25-yard field goal.
Kendall drove the offense 58 yards on its next possession, but the defense stiffened again and forced a Seibert 29-yard attempt that he converted. Seibert finished the night 3-for-3 on field goal tries.
The scrimmage concluded with the defense forcing and recovering a fumble after the offense had driven 42 yards to the defense's 44-yard line.
Asked if he learned anything throughout the course of the night, Riley answered, "It'll be good to see the tape. The biggest thing you see with this that we haven't seen is guys running live. We had some broken tackles with some (offensive) guys who ran through some stuff, and then I thought there were some guys who made some really nice open-field tackles, too, and did tackle well. That's what we'll go back and evaluate more than anything — guys running with the ball and breaking tackles, and who were our best tacklers."
The Sooners, ranked No. 8 in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll, open the season Sept. 2 at home against UTEP.
