Still dealing with the absence of injured senior Andrew Harris, the Sooners' Big 12 showdown against TCU was their second match in three days. The shorthanded squad put up a big fight on Friday night against Texas, falling just short in a 4-3 loss.
TCU opened up Sunday afternoon's tilt by capturing the doubles points due to victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, and continued its momentum into singles. The Horned Frogs extended their lead to 3-0 with wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles, but Oklahoma still had juice left in the tank.
TCU clinched the dual with a 6-2, 7-5 win on court three, with OU leading at two of the other three courts at the time of the clincher. Senior Alex Ghilea went unfinished at No. 2 while he led No. 27 Alex Rybakov 6-4, 5-1. Freshman Arnaud Restifo also was leading his match at line six singles, 6-3, 4-4.
"Alex has been very, very good in the locker room speaking up. We've just got to be a little tougher and win the bigger points"
- Head Coach Nick Crowell
Freshman Jochen Bertsch went unfinished at No. 4 singles versus No. 81 Jerry Lopez.
“I thought courts two, four and six did a great job today,” head coach Nick Crowell said. “On one, three and five, maybe those guys were just playing better on those courts, but we just never got it rolling.”
The Sooners have another pair of weekend conference matches upcoming, as they'll travel to Waco, Texas, to face Baylor on Friday, April 7 followed by a match at Texas Tech on Sunday, April 9.
“(Alex) has been very, very good in the locker room speaking up,” Crowell said. “We're just talking about our toughness, and our toughness needs to continue to grow. Alex has voiced that, all throughout the lineup, one through six (singles) and one through three doubles. We've just got to be a little tougher and win the bigger points.”
Crowell and his squad will next be in Norman at the Headington Family Tennis Center on April 22, taking on Oklahoma State at 12:30 p.m. CT. As always for regular season matches, admission will be free for all fans.
Bedlam will mark the final regular season affair for the Sooners, but they won't be finished playing at home, as OU hosts the Big 12 tournament April 28-30.
