Sooners Push No. 3 Baylor to the Wire, Fall 4-3

NORMAN – A shorthanded No. 16 Oklahoma men's tennis team pushed No. 3 Baylor to the wire Friday night before ultimately falling to the Bears, 4-3, at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
The Sooners, without injured senior Andrew Harris, moved to 12-9 in 2017 following the defeat.
The third-ranked Bears, now 20-3 on the season, opened the dual by taking the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. OU's tandem of Spencer Papa and Jochen Bertsch went unfinished at line one.
After Baylor extended its dual lead to 2-0 with a victory at No. 3 singles, Oklahoma senior Alex Ghilea got his squad on the board. The Neamt, Romania, native defeated No. 41 Max Tchoutakian 6-1, 6-2 at line two, increasing his singles record on the season to 14-3.
Baylor pushed its lead to 3-1 with a win at the No. 4 singles spot, but OU continued to fight. Papa, the 20th-ranked singles player in the nation, came through with a huge win at No. 1 singles over No. 10 Juan Benitez 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. Papa improved to 7-5 at line one on the season and has two wins over top-10 opponents.
Freshman Adrian Oetzbach of Velbert, Germany, kept Oklahoma alive with a clutch, three-set victory at No. 6 singles over Constantin Frantzen 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to tie up the dual at 3-3. Oetzbach's win left only freshman Arnaud Restifo left on the courts.
Restifo dropped a close first set in a breaker but went on to win set two, 7-5. The Nice, France, native battled Jimmy Bendeck of Baylor all the way through in the final set. Restifo twice led by a break and served for the dual at 5-4 before eventually falling just short, 5-7. The win for Baylor snapped their five-match losing streak against the Sooners in dual play.
The Sooners will quickly hit the road for Lubbock, Texas, to take on Texas Tech on Sunday, April 9 at the McLeod Tennis Center at 3 p.m. CT.
Following Sunday's tilt, OU head coach Nick Crowell and his team will have a week off before their regular season finale on Saturday, April 22 - Bedlam. The senior night match against the Cowboys, slated to begin at 12:30 p.m., will be Bragusi, Ghilea and Harris' final match at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
