NORMAN — The Big 12 Conference named University of Oklahoma freshman guard Kameron McGusty an All-Big 12 honorable mention and member of the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team for the 2016-17 season, the conference announced Sunday. The official All-Big 12 awards are selected by the league's head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.

The conference honors make McGusty the most decorated Sooner freshman of the Lon Kruger era. He is the first OU freshman to earn All-Big 12 honors and All-Newcomer status since Tommy Mason-Griffin in 2009-10.

A 6-5 guard from Katy, Texas, McGusty finished Big 12 play averaging 14.4 points (third among Big 12 freshmen), 2.3 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 0.9 assists in 30.7 minutes. The guard scored in double figures in all but two Big 12 contests, including a streak of 15 consecutive games of double-digit scoring from Jan. 3 through Feb. 21. McGusty's streak was the longest by any Big 12 freshman this season and the longest by an OU freshman since Jeff Webster (22 games) in 1990-91.

In 30 overall games this season (16 starts), McGusty is averaging 10.9 points and 2.0 rebounds in 24.7 minutes while shooting .436 from the field and .359 from 3-point range. His 328 total points rank 10th all-time among Sooner freshmen.

Additionally, the conference named McGusty as its Phillips 66 Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for his performance in Oklahoma's games against Kansas (Feb. 27) and TCU (March 4). McGusty finished the week averaging 18.0 points, 2.0 steals and 1.5 rebounds in 36.0 minutes as the Sooners went 1-1. He shot .452 percent from the field while shooting 4-of-8 from 3-point range and 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

McGusty's week was highlighted by a career-high-tying 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting (2-of-3 from 3-point range) in Saturday's win over TCU. He scored 15 of his point after halftime on 5-of-8 shooting (2-of-2 from 3). The performance was McGusty's fourth 20 point game this season, which is the most by an OU freshman since Mason-Griffin produced seven in 2009-10.
