BERKELEY, Calif. — In the final competition of its regular season slate, the No. 1 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team posted a 197.800-196.775 victory over No. 17 California, its 11th win over a ranked foe this season. The meet was held Sunday afternoon inside Haas Pavilion.
The win gives the Sooners a perfect 15-0 overall record, their fifth undefeated regular season under 11th-year head coach K.J. Kindler (2008, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2017). Dating back to the 2016 season, the Sooners have picked up 53 straight wins, including 40 consecutive victories on the road.
The Sooners were steady across the board against the Bears, recording a 49.525 on floor and identical marks of 49.425 on vault, bars and beam. OU also picked up at least a share of all the individual titles.
Senior Chayse Capps and sophomore Brenna Dowell split the top honor on vault with marks of 9.925. On bars, Dowell shared the title with teammates Maggie Nichols and Stefani Catour. Capps and Nichols, along with OU junior Natalie Brown and Cal's Emily Richardson, placed first on beam with 9.9s. Junior AJ Jackson claimed the floor title with a 9.95, and Capps posted the highest all-around score with a 39.625.
"Our landings were much better tonight," Kindler said. "We stuck 10 of 12 dismounts on bars and beam and vault was very controlled. A big improvement going into the postseason."
Bars has been one of the most consistent events for the Sooners all season and Sunday was no exception. All six Sooners scored at least a 9.85 as OU tallied a 49.425 on the apparatus to take an early lead over the Bears, who added a 49.175 on vault.
A trio of Sooners recorded 9.9s in Catour, Dowell and Nichols. Capps set the tone with a solid 9.875 in the leadoff position, while sophomore Nicole Lehrmann and senior McKenzie Wofford both recorded totals of 9.85.
The Sooners remained constant on vault, matching their first rotation score with a 49.425. OU held a 98.850-98.300 advantage at the halfway point after Cal tallied a 49.125 on bars.
Capps and Dowell paced the road team with identical scores of 9.925, which matched a season best for Capps. As the anchor, Jackson contributed a 9.9, the eighth time this season the junior has scored at least a 9.9 on the event. In the No. 4 spot, freshman Jade Degouveia recorded a 9.875, while senior Charity Jones led off with a 9.8.
On floor, Oklahoma tallied a 49.525 to stretch its lead to 148.375-147.625 after all six Sooners again scored at least a 9.85. Jackson impressed in the anchor spot with a huge 9.95, her sixth straight meet scoring at least that total on the event.
In the No. 5 spot, Capps provided a 9.925, while senior Nicole Turner and Dowell both posted marks of 9.9. The score represented a career high for Turner. Jones and Brown opened the rotation with back-to-back 9.85s.
"So excited to see Nicole Turner reaching her potential," Kindler said.
OU concluded the meet on a strong note, posting a 49.425 on beam. In the rotation, the Bears recorded a floor score of 49.150. Brown, Nichols and Capps wrapped up the event with three straight 9.9s. In the No. 3 spot, Catour tallied a 9.875, while Lehrmann added a 9.85 in the second position. Jones led off with a 9.825.
Next weekend, postseason competition begins for Oklahoma as it heads to the Big 12 Championship, scheduled for 4 p.m. CT on Saturday inside Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas.
The Sooners will be in pursuit of their sixth straight conference championship and ninth under Kindler. The meet, which will pit OU against No. 8 Denver, No. 22 West Virginia and Iowa State, will air through FloGymnastics (subscription required).
