Sooners Host Mountaineers on Wednesday

WEDNESDAY'S GAME BASICS

Oklahoma (8-14, 2-8 Big 12) returns to Lloyd Noble Center for a midweek matchup against No. 13/14 West Virginia (18-5, 6-4 Big 12). The Sooners overcame a 15-point deficit to win in overtime when the two teams met earlier this season in Morgantown. OU aims to sweep the Mountaineers in the regular season for the third time in the Lon Kruger era.

ON THE AIR

Wednesday's contest tips off at 8 p.m. CT and air on the Sooner Radio Network (KRXO 107.7 FM “The Franchise” in Oklahoma City; KTBZ 1430 AM in Tulsa) with Toby Rowland and Kevin Henry announcing. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2 with Bob Wischusen and Fran Fraschilla calling the action.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

• A pair of rookie Sooners enter their second game of February coming off of an excellent January. Freshmen Kameron McGusty and Kristian Doolittle combined to average 27.1 points per game in the month of January, almost doubling their scoring output from the first month of the season (15.0 points per game in November).

• With 16 points against Texas Tech, McGusty extended his streak of scoring in double figures to 10 consecutive games. His streak is the longest by an OU freshman since Jeff Webster in 1990-91. Webster, who ranks third on Oklahoma's career scoring list, put together 22 straight double-digit performances in his freshman campaign.

• Senior guard Jordan Woodard will play the Mountaineers for the ninth time in his career. Woodard averages 13.1 points, 4.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals when facing West Virginia. In the first matchup with the Mountaineers this season, he led the Sooners with 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting, adding five assists, four rebounds and four steals while making the winning bucket with 2.2 seconds left in overtime.

• Junior forward Khadeem Lattin recorded a season-high six blocked shots in his last home game (vs. Oklahoma State on Jan. 30). Lattin is second in the Big 12 in blocked shots during conference play, registering 2.6 rejections per game (2.1 on the season).

• ESPN's College Basketball Power Index (BPI) ranks the Sooners' strength of schedule as the toughest in the nation. This season, OU has faced four teams in the current AP Top 25 - No. 3 Kansas, No. 6 Baylor, No. 7 Wisconsin and No. 13 West Virginia.

LOOKING BACK AT TEXAS TECH

• Oklahoma (8-14, 2-8 Big 12) fell on the road to Texas Tech (16-7, 4-6 Big 12), 77-69, at United Supermarkets Arena. The Sooners split the season series with the Red Raiders and are now 8-4 against Tech during the Lon Kruger era.

• Freshman guard Kameron McGusty led the Oklahoma scoring efforts with 16 points and a career-high four 3-pointers on seven attempts. McGusty has scored at least 15 points in five of his last six outings.

• Four Sooners scored in double figures, including sophomore guard Rashard Odomes with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Odomes added four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

• Junior forward Khadeem Lattin tallied 11 points and six rebounds – five of which came on the offensive end. Senior guard Jordan Woodard also scored 11, adding five boards.

• The Sooners limited Texas Tech to 12 points in the paint – the fewest by an OU opponent this season.

Kameron McGusty is the first freshman in the past 25 years to scored in double figures for 10-straight games.

YOUTH GROUP

• One of the youngest teams in both the Big 12 and the nation, Oklahoma has seen its freshmen and sophomores play a large role for the Sooners this season. The Sooner roster boasts 11 underclassmen (freshmen and sophomores) – the most of any OU team in the Lon Kruger era and the most of any Big 12 roster this season. The young Sooners have received ample experience through their first nine Big 12 contests.

• OU freshmen have played a total of 746 minutes (second most in Big 12), averaging a combined 28.5 points per game and contributing 39.6 percent of OU's scoring in Big 12 play - the second-highest percentage in the conference. Sooner underclassmen rank second in the Big 12 in total minutes played in conference competition (1,494) and have scored 69.8 percent of Oklahoma's points in league play (second in Big 12).

SERIES HISTORY

• Oklahoma leads the all-time series, 9-4, and is a perfect 4-0 against the Mountaineers in Norman.

• OU upset West Virginia in the first meeting of the season, outlasting WVU, 89-87, in overtime. West Virginia, ranked No. 7 at the time, is the highest rated opponent Oklahoma has defeated in a true road game since Feb. 17, 1993, when the unranked Sooners defeated No. 6 Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse, 80-77.

• The Sooners have won four of the past five meetings, with the lone loss coming in the semifinals of the 2016 Big 12 Championship, falling, 69-67, when Buddy Hield's would-be game-winner came just after the buzzer.

UP NEXT

• The Sooners head to Ames, Iowa, this weekend for a 5 p.m. CT meeting with Iowa State on Saturday, Feb. 11. The matchup will air on ESPN2. Oklahoma owns a 115-86 all-time record against the Cyclones, while ISU is 50-37 against the Sooners when playing in Ames. OU is 5-9 against Iowa State during the Kruger era, but has won two of the previous four meetings.

• Iowa State outlasted the Sooners in double overtime, 92-87, in the first meeting of the season (Jan. 21). Jordan Woodard scored all 21 of his points after halftime, adding seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in 43 minutes of action. Kristian Doolittle totaled 15 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for the first double-double of his collegiate career and Kameron McGusty poured in 19 points.

• The two schools split the 2015-16 regular season series with the home team winning each meeting. They met again in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship in Kansas City with Oklahoma pulling off the 79-76 win.
