NORMAN?? University of Oklahoma head football coach Lincoln Riley announced the signing of 17 members of his inaugural recruiting class Wednesday, the first day of the NCAA's new early signing period.
Of the 17 signees, 14 are ranked as four-star prospects on a five-star scale by recruiting services ESPN, 247Sports or Rivals. The other three are consensus three-star recruits. The early signing period lasts through Friday. The regular signing period runs from Feb. 7 through April 1.
"It's a really strong group," said Riley, whose Sooners are ranked No. 2 and will play No. 3 Georgia on Jan. 1 in the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Rose Bowl Game.?"I would say that everybody we expected to sign has. A lot of guys in this group have stuck with us for a long time after committing early, even through the coaching change last summer.
"Great class. We hit a lot of the targets and needs that we had, and we're excited to get a lot of these guys in here mid-term."
? Head Coach Lincoln Riley
"It's a great foundation of players from all over the country. We signed some very strong players out of our home state, which we're very proud of. Texas was again, and always will be, a big target for us. And we got several other guys from across the country. Great class. We hit a lot of the targets and needs that we had, and we're excited to get a lot of these guys in here mid-term."
Sixteen of the 17 signees are high schoolers and the other is at a junior college. Wednesday's signees hail from seven states and represent nine position groups.
The states of Oklahoma and Texas produced the most OU signees on Wednesday with six each, while California, Florida, Missouri, Ohio and Tennessee each generated one.
Riley said several of Wednesday's signees are planning to enroll at OU for the spring semester.?They are cornerback Starrland Baldwin, receiver Jaqualyn Crawford, cornerback Miguel Edwards, safety Patrick Fields, offensive lineman Tramonda Moore, defensive end Ronnie Perkins, running back T.J. Pledger, defensive end Jalen Redmond and safety Delarrin Turner-Yell.
"We'll definitely sign some more guys in this class," said Riley. "When the dust settles here after this first signing period, there will be a reevaluation process in terms of who we've signed, who other schools have signed, who's still out there; just trying to find the best ones to fill the remaining spots. It will still be active and busy here in the next couple days, and certainly up through February."
