TULSA, Okla. — Behind a golden goal from senior midfielder Shiloh Price, the Oklahoma soccer team secured a 3-2, overtime victory over in-state foe Tulsa on Friday night. The match, part of the Tulsa Classic, was played at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
The Sooners (4-2-1 overall) put pressure on the Tulsa (3-3-1 overall) offensively early in the first half before breaking through with their first goal in the 28th minute. Off a rebound attempt following a shot from senior forward Liz Keester, senior defender Rachel Ressler tapped in a goal from five yards out.
The second-half scoring went back and forth, as the Golden Hurricane tallied two goals in the frame and the Sooners added one. In the 62nd minute, Tulsa found the equalizer in the form of junior midfielder Rachel Thun's fourth goal of the season.
However, the tie did not last long as Keester answered the Tulsa goal just 42 seconds later with one of her own, punching in a cross from senior midfielder/forward Madison Saliba in the 63rd minute.
Tulsa again tied the match in the 86th minute as freshman defender Annabeth Fouts sent in a score from junior midfielder Tana Dake, knotting it at 2-2 and forcing overtime.
Just two minutes into overtime, Price gave the Sooners the victory off an assist from Ressler. This season, Ressler, Keester and Price all have two goals, tied for a team high, and Keester is also tied for the OU best with three assists.
OU's defense held strong all night, limiting the Golden Hurricane to just six shots, with the first not coming until the 49th minute. The Sooners outshot Tulsa by a commanding total of 20 to six, including an 11 to two edge in shots on goal. Both Keester and Saliba finished with seven shots for OU, while Ressler and Price had two each.
The Sooners will close their weekend at the Tulsa Classic when they play Memphis in a neutral site matchup. The contest is slated to begin at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday. This season, the Sooners are celebrating 20 years of their program, which began in 1996.
