NORMAN — Behind a penalty kick from junior defender Madeline Brem and a strong defensive performance, the Oklahoma soccer team handed TCU its first loss of the season in shutout fashion, 1-0, to open its Big 12 Conference schedule.
The Sooners (8-2-1 overall, 1-0-0 Big 12) have now won six straight matches, tying such a stretch from the 2002 season for second longest in program history. TCU fell to 7-1-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play with the loss.
“To keep a team like TCU off the scoresheet is no easy task," fifth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said. "They are undefeated for a reason. We did what was important to go up in a game between two good teams. It was not necessarily our best performance but lots to take from it. We have kept a TCU team that has been scoring goals regularly off the score sheet."
After junior midfielder Lizzie Luallin was fouled by a TCU defender in the box in the 15th minute, Brem converted a penalty kick to the left corner of the net to put the Sooners on top. The goal represented the first the Sooners have scored in the opening half at home this season, and it also marked the first time TCU has trailed since its season-opening match at Maryland. OU has scored 21 goals this season, with four of those coming in the first half.
Senior Kassidie Stade has played every minute in goal for OU this season, posting an 8-2-1 record. Against TCU, the Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., native corralled two saves. TCU entered the match with 24 goals scored on the year, and the shutout was the fourth of the season for the Sooners.
OU outshot the Horned Frogs by a 13-8 margin, including a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. Senior defender Rachel Ressler and senior midfielder Jemma Cota recorded three shots apiece, while freshman midfielder Kristina O'Donnell added two.
TCU junior goalkeeper Courtney Hoffer took the loss and fell to 3-1-0 on the year, allowing one goal and recording one save in 45 minutes of play, while freshman Katie Lund added a save in the second half.
Up next, the Sooners host Texas in a conference matchup at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Oklahoma and Fox College Sports Central.
This season, the Sooners are celebrating 20 years of their program, which began in 1996. Tickets are available online through SoonerSports.com or over the phone at (405) 325-2424 or toll-free at 800-456-GoOU.
