PHOENIX, Ariz. — For the fifth straight match, the Oklahoma soccer team recorded a victory, defeating Grand Canyon, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon inside GCU Stadium. Senior forward Liz Keester tallied two goals for the Sooners, and junior midfielder Lizzie Luallin recorded the equalizer.
For the second consecutive contest, the Sooners entered the locker room down 1-0 but responded in the final 45 minutes to snag a pair of victories.
OU (7-2-1 overall) outshot the Lopes (3-6-0 overall) by a 15 to four clip, including a five to two margin in shots on goal. OU has now scored 17 of their 20 goals this season in the second half or overtime.
"For many reasons, today had the potential to be and turned out to be a difficult day," fifth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said. "We were disappointed to go down a goal but credit to Grand Canyon. We were fortunate to create and score early in the second half, which settled us down, and then we did just enough to create chances and execute to go ahead and earn the win. Overall a great and challenging weekend that sets us up to go home and now get ready for conference play."
The first goal of the match came in the 18th minute from junior forward Milla Benedetti on Grand Canyon's first shot of the game.
Throughout the opening frame, the Sooners had several offensive opportunities early but were not able to convert. That changed in the second half as the offense started to click early in the second half, with 10 of OU's shots coming after the break.
In the 51st minute, Luallin tapped in the equalizer off an assist from junior midfielder Tori Bowman. The score was Luallin's first this season, and it was also Bowman's first assist.
Keester continued to come up big for the Sooners as both of her shots found the back of the net. She recorded both the game-winning and game-sealing goals, her team-best fifth and sixth scores of the season, respectively. Four of those goals have been game winners, also a team best.
The Tulsa, Okla., native has now scored in each of the last five matches. Her first goal on Sunday came in the 62nd minute as she took advantage of a GCU misplay to sneak in the ball. Then, in the 90th minute, Keester sealed the OU win as she tapped in a score from classmate Shiloh Price.
Next weekend, the Sooners return home to Norman to open their Big 12 slate after playing their last six matches on the road. OU will host TCU at 6:30 p.m. CT on Friday before facing Texas a 1 p.m. CT on Sunday. Tickets are available online through SoonerSports.com or over the phone at (405) 325-2424 or toll-free at 800-456-GoOU. This season, the Sooners are celebrating 20 years of their program, which began in 1996.
